Anyone been successful in connecting ArcGIS Explorer 2500 to an ARcSDE 10.1/10.2 geodatabase (direct connection)? Still have never been successful connecting to our SQL Server, which is pretty frustrating.

Thanks, Only the 64-bit client installs on a 64 bit OS (which is what I have), and besides, I am able to make a direct connection via ArcMap with this client, but not with Explorer. Nick

Thanks, However, this doesn't work, and neither does the information on using a direct connection to SQL Server, which is a link from this page, included in my previous post. Nick

I have the same issue - the application crashes intermittently during development. Another issue includes losing the reference to images when customising tasks. Its a pretty unstable application, but worth putting up with given how much time it save building applications.

I am unable to connect to ArcSDE using 2500. I am trying to connect to an SQL server following the instructions: http://help.arcgis.com/en/arcgisdesktop/10.0/help/index.html#//002q00000039000000 My SQL Server instance is called myServer, the port number is 1234 (they are not actual values), so I type myServer into the Server text box, sde:sqlserver:myServer,1234 into the Service text box, and the database name in the database name field. I am using OS authentication. This doesnt work. i have tried various permutations for the connection details, but no luck. Any suggestions?

Hi, I am getting the same error, although, I haven't secured any services, apart from the default AD security restrictions. I get this variation of the message; Error while using HTTPS security, URL = our-url/MapServer?f=json, HTTP Status code = 0 and Status Text = We have SSL security in place, and everything else works well. However, in my case, the print service is implemented in the ArcGIS Viewer for Silverlight. Thanks, Nick

Hi all, I have managed to find the solution. If anyone is having issues accessing SOAP services from ArcGIS clients when connecting to a reverse proxy server using SSL, try explicitly entering the port number 443 in the URL you are connecting to. If this still doesnt work, there are other things you can try - happy to provide more details. Nick

Hi, We currently have ArcGIS Server 10.1 with an IIS internal web server, Webadaptor, and with a IIS proxy server in the DMZ. I understand that for SSL, the protocol setting on the Web Adaptor should be set to HTTPS only. Currently for us however, it is set to HTTPS and HTTP which means it can accept both HTTP and HTTPS requests. There are no issues with accessing the internal web server via http and https. Everything works perfectly. Accessing the external web server ???https://<name>/rest/??? also appears to work for some services, but others are not working properly. Some clients such the Silverlight Viewer can access service normally via connection to the external web server, but using ArcGIS Explorer and ArcGIS Desktop, these services dont work. Those same services however work normally using these clients and the internal web server. Therefore, something is wrong either with the connection between the internal and external web server, or with the external web server itself. Accessing the external web server using the http address ???http://<name>/arcgis/rest/??? works perfectly. Therefore, http connections between the two web servers seems to work normally. The recommendation by ESRI is to set the Web Adaptor to HTTPS only when using SSL. When we set it to this, we no longer can access ANY ArcGIS services using ???https://<name>/rest/???, which, when on the http setting, at least allowed some services to work. My suspicion is that requests to ???https://<name>/rest/??? to the external web server, are being directed to the internal server using http instead of HTTPS. This would explain the current behaviour. Is this supposed to be this way? Perhaps the translation from HTTPS to HTTP is the reason some services work and not others and for some clients, and not others. I have raised this with tech support, but was hoping someone out there can provide some ideas about what is wrong. Thanks, Nick

Thanks for your interest in this problem. I suspect that there is an issue with python memory management. Here is the code with some comments: import string, os, sys, locale, arcpy, pyodbc, random try: arcgis_con = pyodbc.connect('Driver={SQL Server Native Client 10.0};Server=xxx,xxx;Database=xxx;Trusted_Connection=yes;') arcgis_cur = arcgis_con.cursor() Area_of_Interest = arcpy.GetParameterAsText(0) #user defined polygon outputFC = arcpy.GetParameterAsText(1) #output year = arcpy.GetParameterAsText(2) #year inDesc = arcpy.Describe(Area_of_Interest) inRows = arcpy.SearchCursor(Area_of_Interest) inRow = inRows.next() outLine = "" while inRow: #creates a string defining coordinates of polygon partnum=0 feat = inRow.getValue(inDesc.ShapeFieldName) ##when run the second time, degugging reveals script fails here trying to reference inDesc.ShapeFieldName while partnum < 1: part = feat.getPart(partnum) part.reset() pnt = part.next() pnt_count = 0 while pnt: if pnt_count==0: outLine = str(pnt.X) + " " + str(pnt.Y) else: outLine = str(pnt.X) + " " + str(pnt.Y) + " , " + outLine pnt = part.next() pnt_count += 1 if not pnt: pnt = part.next() partnum += 1 inRow = inRows.next() randomTab = "dbo." + ''.join(random.choice(string.ascii_uppercase) for x in range(10)) #table with random name to be inserted into DBMS for query querystring = "CREATE TABLE " + randomTab + " (id int IDENTITY (1,1), GeogCol1 geography);" #creates a sql server table with a geography column based on polygon coordinates arcgis_cur.execute(querystring) querystring = "INSERT INTO " + randomTab + " (GeogCol1) VALUES (geography::STGeomFromText('POLYGON((" + outLine + "))', 4283));" arcgis_cur.execute(querystring) querystring = ##sql query which is complex## arcgis_cur.execute(querystring) arcpy.CopyFeatures_management(Area_of_Interest, outputFC) total = 0 while 1: row = arcgis_cur.fetchone() if not row: break age_var = row.age age_var = age_var.replace("-","_") age_var = age_var.replace(" ","") age_var = age_var.replace("+","plus") var = row.Sex[0] + "_" + age_var arcpy.AddField_management(outputFC, var, "DOUBLE",10,3,"","","NULLABLE") arcpy.CalculateField_management(outputFC, var, row.population, "PYTHON_9.3") total = total + row.population arcpy.AddField_management(outputFC, "Total", "DOUBLE",10,1,"","","NULLABLE") arcpy.CalculateField_management(outputFC, "Total", total, "PYTHON_9.3") querystring = "DROP TABLE " + randomTab + ";" arcgis_cur.execute(querystring) arcgis_con.commit() arcgis_con.close() except Exception, ErrorDesc: The script uses a polygon defined by the user, extracts the coordinates, and inserts in SQL Server so as to carry a spatial join with spatially enabled data there. It then creates a table and polygon for the user. The script runs fine multiple times in desktop. I thought I narrowed down the issue to the line 'feat = inRow.getValue(inDesc.ShapeFieldName)', however, hardcoding a value here just makes the script run successfully one extra time, before failing again somewhere else in the program (haven't search where this time) when run again with the same memory access issue. Good luck and appreciate any help. Nick

Hi, I have a geoprocessing task that uses pyodbc to query a database. The tool works fine when run on the local desktop, but when deployed on the server, it fails the second time round i.e. it works the first time, but when it is run again it crashes. Running again then works, but running again crashes etc. The server logs reveal the task ???crashes???, whilst .dmp files reveal an attempt to read or write to protected memory. I then included in the code explicit delete for variables and even a gc.collect() call, and the latter seems to have the effect of making the crash occur every 3rd run as opposed to every 2nd. I have applied SP1 (ArcGIS 10.1), however, this has only had a marginal improvement in that instead of an error being thrown up each 2nd/3rd run, it now just hangs until you cancel it, re-run it and the pattern continues. Any insights into how to work around this would be great. Nick

I have also found that some functionality, such as the ability to change symbology on query layers is now gone. I would have much prefered that ArcGIS Map Services (or feature services) have the capability of displaying attribute tables, changing symbology and be capable of spatial queries. I am not sure why the developers are restricting this functionality. If it is possible with the Silverlight and Flex viewers, it should be possible with a standalone desktop. Unfortunately for our business needs i.e. interacting with our map and feature services, this version is not very useful. And our data is much too sensitive (and large) to put on ArcGIS online. Nick

Thanks, I am those that couldn't wait, and my impressions are good. If I am jumping the gun, and theres more information when the documentation is up, forgive me, but just a couple of things: We now publish query layers on an enterprise database (SQL Server, not geodatabase) as map services, and I find that when I query the layer in ArcGIS Explorer, and click the 'Get sample values', only one is returned, and when you test a query, and click OK, only one point is added to the layer, despite multiple features being found, and the attribute table showing all these records. This behaviour does not occur with geodatabases. This will unfortunately mean we have to rely on Web API's for users to properly consume such web services. I am not sure how to connect to a 10.1 geodatabase as the dialog window is for the old 10.0 and previous versions. Thanks for improving the geocoding service for Australia. Much appreciated. What would be nice if you could see the attribute table for MapServices, as well as being able to change the symbology. Otherwise, it is a great improvement, and so far seems stable. Regards, Nick

Yes, I have the same issue. Installed VS 2012, all the necessary dependencies, and no ESRI Templates. I did find however that if I go to Control Panel-Uninstall a program, and Modify ArcGIS API 3.1 for Silverlight, that the project Templates did not install. After installing these, the ESRI templates appear, but not the ESRI Viewer template. I am installing on Windows 7 64 bit. Nick
