So my latest try is: SELECT * FROM Temp.DBO.NTS_50k WHERE Temp.DBO.County_Boundary_2005.STIntersection(Temp.DBO.NTS_50k) and I received the following error: [[Microsoft][SQL Server Native Client 10.0][SQL Server]An expression of non-Boolean type specified in a context where a condition is expected, near ')'.] I'm pretty sure I have the Caps etc right because the select statement without the where clause works to create the appropriate view.

Vince, I didn't read your previous post well enough so I'm going to look into STIntersects a bit more, but I think I tried it yesterday and got an error so I just assumed my system wasn't capable. Maybe it was just the syntax.

Hi Vince, Thank you for the helpful posts. I can see that I didn't explain well enough. The syntax I think I can work out through trial and error. It is the spatial intersection that escape me. In 'pseudo-code' what I am trying to do is: SELECT * FROM Temp.DBO.NTS_50k WHERE (Temp.DBO.NTS_50k features spatially intersect any part of Temp.DBO.CountyBoundary) Is the above select statement even possible with MSSQL Standard 2012? If it is, where would I look for information on what syntax would be required for the 'spatially intersect' part of the query, again keeping in mind what I am curious about is if I can use this to create a view. If there is a better way to keep an original data set intact, reduce the need for an extra data set and be able to access a subset based on spatial location rather than a query data contained in a field, please let me know.

Also, would you have a link to any documentation on creating a subset query? Thanks in advance.

Please excuse my very basic understanding. Not sure if expensive will impact me or not. Usually under 10 users - VMware environment with lots of resources. Is there a better way to accomplish the goal?

I'm new to this so please bear with me. I saw this cool feature new -> view in ArcCatalog when I right clicked on my database. I immediately created a view with the sql statement select * from Temp.DBO.NTS_50k where NTS50K = '72E16' and it worked perfectly. I got to thinking wouldn't it be great if I could create a view of one dataset based on its intersection with another. That would sure save me a lot of time and not affect my original data. Can anyone tell me how to create (or if it is possible to create) such a query to make a view where one dataset is a subset of features which intersect another feature found in a geodatabase. I'm looking for parcels which intersect my county's boundary. Similar to Select by Location if possible. I have 4 mosaic datasets containing about 90 files each from different years; the size of the largest images are 1.2GB each. One is made up of tifs, three from ecws. Some are natural color and some are black and white. The sets have different projections. My object is to create a master image with a set of time enabled rasters for viewing in ArcGIS 10.1. I had no trouble creating the individual mosaic datasets, however, when I create a new master mosiac dataset to populate the original 4 into, when I add the mosaic datasets one by one (never made it by the first one), a significant amount of reprocessing is occurring and the process fails as soon as all the free disk space is consumed (175GB). I get the message error: 8004205f: No new mosaic dataset item was added. When I added the original photos into the first mosaics I could complete the process with less than 20Gb free space consumed. Is it possible to use less space, or is there a better way, or am I just too greedy trying to process too many files at once?

Would anyone have any updated information on this topic? I too am trying to make the same connection. I followed your instructions and created the linked table in MS SQL Server 2008 R2 Management Studio (Express), however, the connection does not show up in the list of tables when I try to add a database connection in arccatalog. Must be missing a step. Your document was good information though.

Sorry, just for clarification, the first line above also works when there is a period without the html code.

Thank you for the prompt reply. For some reason it works in the label maker but is not showing up on the map.[ATTACH=CONFIG]14363[/ATTACH] In further testing, if I put a period in front it 'initializes' it and the label works.[ATTACH=CONFIG]14364[/ATTACH]

I would like to use this character in my label expression: http://www.fileformat.info/info/unicode/char/2198/index.htm It displays fine in the label expression but I can't see it on the map. It is a label on a polygon. Label Expression is as follows: Function FindLabel ( [Direction] ) myDir = [Direction] if myDir = "southeast" then FindLabel = "???" End if End Function

Hopefully this is an easy question. I have a shapefile with a field called Direction. I want to replace the values in the field (east, west, north and south) with arrows indicating direction in my Label Expression. Function FindLabel ( [Direction] ) NewString = Replace( [Direction], "west","→") FindLabel = NewString End Function the label is appearing as → rather than the arrow pointing right I would prefer to see. I did it before using this code but it only worked if there was another character in front of the arrow. Function FindLabel ( [Direction] ) d = [Direction] if d = "west" then myLabel = ".???" FindLabel= myLabel ElseIf d = "east" then myLabel = ".???" FindLabel= myLabel elseif d = "north" then myLabel = ".???" FindLabel= myLabel elseif d = "south" then myLabel = ".???" FindLabel= myLabel else FindLabel = [Direction] End If End Function

I'd like to find some information on how to get started. I have lots of gdb information which I would like to standardize using Local Government Schema available online. Can anyone offer suggestions on basic steps to get started? I've already had a look at the basic documentation that comes with the Schema, but it isn't detailed enough. Appreciate any help.
