I tried changing the default locators xml but it didn't work. The software's behavior was unchanged....still grinds-away for minutes, trying to connect to ArcGIS Online and it still throws the sign-in prompt window. I imagine doing this might have prevented the application from trying to connect to the World Geocoding Service, but what about the World Routing Service? This is an issue in both the Geocoding toolbar and the Find tool search results (r-click context menus). Is there also a way to somehow 'disable' the software's attempt to connect to ArcGIS Online for the World Routing Service as well? These work-around (editing buried xmls) seems like a bit of a 'hack' at an issue that should be resolved by the software engineers / user-experience folks. Could this get put on an bug punch-list?

I'm running ArcMap 10.5.1 and it, along with the last several version of ArcMap, have a very frustrating behavior when using the "Find" tool or the Geocoding toolbar. Nearly every time I use these tools, I'm only interested in searching against locally stored data. However, whenever I right-click the search box to bring up the context menu so that I can choose to "Pan-to" the match, ArcMap grinds away with a pinwheel for several minutes trying to use the internet connection to establish an organizational login to ArcGIS, for use of the "World Geocoding Service" and "World Routing Service". Can't that login attempt occur at some point after the user has indicated they wish to use those services!? The average city-government ArcMap user wanting to find and pan the map to a particular property by searching their cadastral data for a parcel ID, or their address point data for an address, is faced with this excruciatingly long wait and warning pop-up for services they have no intention of using.

I know this is an old post, but I am currently experiencing this same issue with 10.5.1. Getting a 'general function failure'.

Check to make sure there isn't a path discrepancy within the output geodatabase (i.e., consider the feature dataset within the geodatabase). ArcGIS will return this error if your output location is different (but still within the same geodatabase) from another feature class of the same name.

If an emergency is phoned into 9-1-1 from the trail, assuming the wireless network being used is phase II compliant, then the lat/long are provided to dispatch. However, if the wireless network is only phase I compliant, then only the tower's location is provided (a tower on a hilltop can have a very large coverage area). Also, there are some scenarios where an emergency occurs on a remote trail and a bystander travels (sometimes significant distances) to summon help. To handle these scenarios, the best solution is to install some type of trail marker signs (US National Grid, or just mile markers) - especially for trails that don't have reliable cell phone coverage. Data for these markers can be set up in mobile mapping applications for rescue/1st responders.

Hi, I'm looking for an elegant python expression that I can be used within ArcMap's field calculator to find all instances of consecutive spaces within a string and replace them with a single space. Example:
Let's say in a field called "Address" we have the following value (the product of poor concatenation):

"_123_____Main__St,____Townsville,______CA_98463___"

It should become "123 Main St, Townsville, CA 98463"
I know that .strip will get rid of the leading/trailling spaces. How to I get a find/replace approach to continue looping through until all the double-spaces have been reduced to single spaces? Also, I have tried using .split, but get an error in ArcMap that "Field is not Nullable". Any help would be appreciated.

I'm running a field calculation concatenating two fields, in an SDE geodatabase point file with 62,000 records. Elapsed time was 2 hours 17 minutes 31 seconds. There is no join. I saw some forum discussion recommending using VBA parsing to speed up field calcs when there is a join involved - does that mean that when there is not a join involved that Python parsing is faster? Any tips/tricks for helping this process run a little faster? Thanks, -Matt

I was encountering this same issue and I believe, by trial & error, I have isolated the cause. It seems to occur when the layer package includes feature classes that have specific 'Scale Ranges' set (on the 'General' tab in 'Layer Properties'). Use the "Show layer at all scales" option on all of your layers, then re-build the layer package and try it in ArcGIS Explorer. Post here whether that solved the problem or not. It doesn't entirely make sense, since ArcGIS Explorer appears to/should support this functionality, but I wonder if there is an issue in the layer package creation that corrupts it.
