Typical Solutions to WEBGISDR Task Scheduling Problems

Blog Post created by mpschoelen0 on Jan 3, 2019

WEBGISDR is an extremely useful and simple tool that allows you to rapidly backup an entire ArcGIS Enterprise. This is typically done before major maintenance or migrations, but it is encouraged to be performed on a regular basis. In a windows environment, this is most often accomplished using Task Scheduler.

This quick post describes how to solve a handful of common scenarios:

  • Task Scheduler successfully runs the WEBGISDR task when run manually from this window, but does not run on its own, once you've logged out
  • Task Scheduler gives a vague error message when running the task, and no backup is generated
  • Task Scheduler runs WEBGISDR successfully, but no backup was generated

Task Scheduler successfully runs the WEBGISDR task when run manually from this window, but does not run on its own, once you've logged out

This likely means that the account running the task does not have permissions, and is not related to a WEBGISDR parameter.

  1. Double check that the Triggers were set correctly
  2. Ensure that the user account running the task has access to the .bat file and the properties file. This could be a domain service account or the SYSTEM or NETWORK account
  3. As a last option, check the Run with highest privileges box

Task Scheduler gives a vague error message when running the task, and no backup is generated

This likely means that the Action parameters are set incorrectly, namely the Start in parameter.

  1.   Ensure that you've set the Start in to the folder where the webgisdr.bat file is stored. Then just list the .bat file in the Program/script window. Pay attention to the placement of quotation marks(") and backslashes (\)

         Action: Start a program

         Program/script: webgisdr.bat

Add arguments: --export --file "D:\Program Files\ArcGIS\Portal\tools\webgisdr\export.properties"

         Start in: D:\Program Files\ArcGIS\Portal\tools\webgisdr\

The good news is that Task Scheduler is running properly. The bad news is that you may have a problem with WEBGISDR. This may be as simple as an expired password in the .properties file.

  1. Run WEBGISDR manually in a command prompt window. For example:

    cd /d "D:\Program Files\ArcGIS\Portal\tools\webgisdr\"
    webgisdr.bat --export --file "D:\Program Files\ArcGIS\Portal\tools\webgisdr\export.properties"

  2. Resolve any error messages, then rerun the task in Task Scheduler
