We use ArcGIS Online to host maps that we don't want to be publicly accessible. Map services are provided by our instance of ArcGIS Server. We have both ArcGIS Online and ArcGIS Server. ArcGIS Online allows you to setup groups to control access to your maps. If I understand correctly, you don't need a subscription for maps that are publicly available. Also, you probably lose the ability to use map groups to categorize your maps (that is, without a subscription). You can get away without purchasing an ArcGIS Online subscription. Use the ArcGIS mobile content section on your ArcGIS Server instance to host your maps. You have to go through a bit of a tedious process to get the JSON document built that becomes your actual map. You can get through the process though. Security is not taken care of as it is with an ArcGIS Online subscription. You'd pretty much have to setup your own security. It can be done, but an elegant solution will require a fair amount of time. You will likely find that ArcGIS Online has quite a few bugs. It's mostly usable. Paul Lohr Paul - Thanks for the feedback.

I've been asked why do we need a subscription for ArcGis Online when we have an ArcGis Server with an Enterprise license. What are the advantages of ArcGis Online over an ArcGis Server, if any? I need a business reason to justify the expense of the subscription. A few months back I attended an ArcGis Online demo and I asked why you still needed an ArcGis server if you have an ArcGis Online subscription. And the answer was ArcGis Online didn't yet offer all the features that a server provides. Is there a matrix that details the differences in the features between the two. I work as a sys admin who manages the ArcGis Server. I'm not a Gis Desktop Analyst with an in depth knowledge of the product gained from working with it eight hours a day. Thanks

Just to get the ball rolling here, I'll explain what I know and hopefully it is correct. When purchasing an ArcGIS Server 10.1 license you also purchase the ability to utilize 4 cores - if 4 isn't enough you must purchase additional licensing. Our company is currently going through this decision making process as we're upgrading from 9.2 to 10.1. I cannot give you any information on degradation. I believe Desktop and Catalog are single-core, but that's just from reading the forums here. Thanks for the feedback. We're going from 10 to 10.1 SP1. I've read several documents about it. And most are similar to this link. ESRI claims that multi-cores are supported but the user community claims that an outright falsehood. Anyone else have time to comment? http://support.esri.com/en/knowledgebase/techarticles/detail/31903

I'm asking if the software can take advantage of multiple cores? Yes, I've searched the web for an answer. I have the link to the System Design page. I've read these two sections. http://wiki.gis.com/wiki/index.php/System_Design_Process http://wiki.gis.com/wiki/index.php/Server_Software_Performance I've read that over four cores performance degrades. I've read that you only need a single core but a high frequency processor and as much ram as you can get. There's a lot of conflicting information out there but not a simple yes it can take advantage of more than one core, or no it can't.

In general terms, the URLs are case sensitive. In reality, some part of the URL are not case sensitive, but I think it's easier just to think that it is case sensitive. As far as the /0 at the end...this indicates a particular layer. As feature services can have multiple layers in them, you can specify an index to get a particular one. If you don't specify the index, you get them all added to the web map. thanks, Mike Ok thanks, guess there's a nix server on the backend.

noob getting up to speed. We're running ArcGIS version 10 Enterprise server and .Net. I created a service from an .msd file. I want to add it to ArcGIS.com. The url appears to be case sensitive. Would someone confirm this yes or no? My Map -> Add -> Add layer from web -> URL: field Mixed case this works. servername.domain.org/ArcGIS/rest/services/ServiceName/FeatureServer/0 Lower case it don't. Throws two errs, one - can't connect, two - layer can't be added. servername.domain.org/arcgis/rest/services/servicename/featureserver/0 A colleague tells me you have to add FeatureServer/0 at the end of the URL. What's this do? And I can't see everything that's in the URL field the end of it's truncated. When I click in the box the text disappears. So what's the complete line in the URL field? Thanks
