It's hard to deduce these types of problems without seeing the source or an example. Could you post the code for how you are getting information about the shapefile? You mentioned style issues and one difference between 2.8 and 3.2 is you now need to include an additional css file. Are you inlcuding the css file below on your page? <link rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" href="http://serverapi.arcgisonline.com/jsapi/arcgis/3.2/js/esri/css/esri.css" />

From the look of the picture it looks like it is a CSS issue. Are you loading any custom CSS files?

I'm by no means a dojo expert but I don't believe it is possible to get the JavaScript object from the HTML element. The JavaScript map object contains a link to the HTML element that the map is in but the reverse is not true. I've always just used a global variable called map in order to access it.

I haven't actually used this library but there is this API here: gmaps-utility-gis It allows you to use Google basemaps with esri. By pulling up a console on this example I was able to add this dynamic service to the map with the following: map.addLayer(new esri.layers.ArcGISDynamicMapServiceLayer("http://services.arcgisonline.com/ArcGIS/rest/services/Specialty/Soil_Survey_Map/MapServer"))

Thanks for the help. I've made the output directory accessible now but it didn't fix the problem. I get some very weird results on that map and I think there is something wrong with the way the map is made or the database behind it. It wasn't made by me but swapping to different services on the same server cause it to function properly.

Hi, I'm having some weird behavior with dynamic layers and I'm wondering if it's just something I'm doing wrong or what. I've made an example demonstrating my problem. Example The dynamic layer is never visible. I've made a feature layer that does show up to demonstrate that there should be visible data in the layer. Any help is appreciated!

Are you getting any error messages in the console? If you go to the layers you are loading do they have a Legend section on the rest services like on the layers in example? If your local arcserver is publically accessible it might help if you made a little example of your issue in jsfiddle.

Hi, Toggling the visibility of feature layers is very similar to toggling the visibility of dynamic layers. There's an example here that shows that. There's also APIs you can use to do this like gmaps-utility-gis. It provides a table of contents to toggle layer visibility as seen in this example. On the maps I use I usually just put a checkbox for each layer with a class I know on them. Then I can attach an onclick event to those checkboxes like so:
dojo.query(".layerSelectCheckbox").connect("onclick", function (ev) {
/* check layer visibility */
});
