We have this exact same issue. It does not relate to how cluttered the map is, it seems to being only related to the relative size of the feature on the page. It won't label at a certain scale even if it is the only feature on the map, but if you zoom in it will suddenly label. Regards, Justin

The best way to handling this users case is to use the Tiled Label To Annotation tool. This tool was built to handle Data Driven Pages use cases as well as map service caching cases. Feed in the index layer etc. and set the field for identifying each tile so annotation will be tagged with the ID. It will convert labels to annotation in a separate run done specifically for each page with the correct rotation etc. You can use a Page Definition Query on the annotation layer to filter out annotation that doesn??t apply for the page being viewed when the pages overlap etc. Craig Craig, Thanks for the help, that sounds like it would work for most situations and we'll give it a try. However, it is often not desirable to query out the labels from adjacent pages if the features are still visible on the current page. There really needs to be an "angle relative to the current frame" option for annotation. Thanks, Justin

Justin, I must be missing something or not understanding the problem correctly. How is it possible that with DS MapBook or MapLogic that you were able to rotate annotation features for adjacent pages? Annotation gets rotated like map features, there is not an option to keep annotation horizontal. Only label features have that option. Please send screen shots so we can assess the issue. Jeff Sorry, I should have clarified. This only worked properly in 9.3.1 if you stored the annotation in the map, not in a geodatabase. Though it no longer works in 10 even if you store it in the map. Perhaps it was a glitch or bug that made it work before, but it sure was helpful. The labeling engine is not perfect (standard or Maplex), and often has overlapping labels (particularly with callouts) that need to be manually adjusted throughout the map book. The only way to do this that I am aware of is in 9.3.1 using map document annotation. Thanks, Justin

I'm not sure if annotation groups are the best strategy for strip maps. Here is an quote from help: "Map document annotation is stored in map documents in annotation groups within each data frame. Choose map document annotation if you only want to use your text in one particular map." Two thoughts - 1) use basic labeling with horizontal options. or 2) mask the labels outside of your index polygon. It would be great if you could include a couple of screenshots. Thanks, Jeff This is a very frustrating problem for me as well. This worked perfectly in 9.3.1 with DS Mapbook or MapLogic, but no longer works in ArcGIS 10. This has severely impacted our workflow and our team constantly has to go back to an old shared computer still running 9.3.1. I have contacted the support team regarding this but they have classified it as an "enhancement request" rather than a bug... though it worked fine in 9.3.1. Not what you'd expect after dropping a couple hundred thousand on "upgrading" everyone. Just one of several issues we are battling... Justin

Does this article help? HowTo: Add descriptive text in the model dialog http://resources.arcgis.com/content/kbase?fa=articleShow&d=38595 Please let me know if you have any feedback on this process! Yes, this article helps, but we shouldn't have to search the forum to find this information. There should be a way to right-click on the model in ArcMap to add this information (if there is already, I couldn't figure it out). I do like the new system once I found it though, it is pretty clean and easy to use. Thanks, Justin

It's probably too late for you now, but this method works for me: http://help.arcgis.com/en/arcgisdesktop/10.0/help/index.html#/Data_area_delineation_from_lidar_points/00q80000006w000000/

I am having trouble getting a good set of footprints generated for my mosaic dataset. The outer edges are generally good enough, but I occasionally get sliver gaps between tiles. I am running the Build Footprints tool with the Maintain Sheet Edges option selected, but it does not appear to work in all cases. Attached is a sample. The outer edges of the imagery corridor is pretty complex since the source is a large set of tiles that were cut from a corridor mosaic made from highly overlapping photos at different angles. Maybe this complex footprint confuses the Maintain Sheet Edges option. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Justin

for Visual Studio Express 2008/ArcGIS 10; - in VS, click on Tools>Code Snippets Manager - Click on Add... and browse to C:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio 9.0\Common 7\IDE\VBExpress\Snippets\ArcObjects - Click OK and OK - ArcObjects will now appear in the "Insert Snippet" context menu Thanks! Funny how it's impossible to find this simple information in the ESRI help.

Hi all, I am trying to build terrain dataset using multiple data sources and I would just like to know the best practices. My study area is a long linear corridor spanning several states. 1) I have 1-meter lidar data available for most of the study area (with a terrain dataset already built), but I would like to supplement this data using the on-the-ground civil survey data that we have collected. Can I just load a new point dataset containing the civil survey points and expect good results? Many of the points fall within the bounds of the lidar data, but there are quite a few areas that fall outside the lidar data. Most of the points are ~100ft apart for general purpose use, and some areas have a full topo done with a 10-ft spacing. 2) I also have relatively low resolution break-lines from the civil survey data. Knowing that the break-line vertices can be upwards of 100ft apart, would adding this information to the lidar generated terrain hurt more than it would help? Perhaps I should erase the portions of the break-lines that fall within the lidar points and only use them with the terrain generated by the survey points outside of the lidar area. 3) As a further supplement to the lidar and civil survey data, I would like to add elevation information from the NED files. For my study area, most of it is 30m with some parts of 10m. I know that this does not compare with the lidar data, but it is better than "no data" regions for my purposes. What is the best way to accomplish this? Sorry for the long-winded message, but processing this data takes a very long time and I would like to get it done in as few attempts as possible. Thanks, Justin
