Hello, Can someone please clarify the results I'm getting for a viewshed analysis on a line/trail. The results of the geoprocessing gave me a normal not visible/visible (pink/green) raster. However, when I open the attribute table I have over 100 values with different counts for each value. Is it correct to interpret it this way - my line has 100 vertices and each vertex will have a corresponding value (vertex #) and corresponding count? Second, how do I map partially visible results from 100% visible (entire trail) results? My line is 20 miles long and I'm assuming most of the trail is only partially visible. I want to show: no visible from any location, partially visible from certain line segments, 100% visible from entire trail. Thanks in advance for your help. Jason

Thanks for the quick response Dan. I have been using the create parallel tool during a edit session for my current use. However, I'd like a python script to avoid having to do this manually every time because sometimes I need to create a lot of parallel lines. Basically I need to create parallel lines/transects from a road centerline for our survey crews. The road centerline would be input #1, the spacing between transects/parallel lines would be input #2, and the total number of transects/parallel lines to create would be input #3 in the tool. Thanks again, Jason

I would like to do the same operation only create parallel lines, not perpendicular. How would I modify the script to do this? What would the math equations change to? Thanks for your help. -Jason

Hi All, I'm having difficulty calculating a field in my Python script. I have a bunch of polylines and I want to get the azimuth for each line in degrees. This is where my code crashes (the math module has already been imported): fieldName3 = "Azimuth"
expression2 = "180+math.atan2(( !Shape.firstpoint.X! - !Shape.lastpoint.X! ),( !Shape.firstpoint.Y! - !Shape.lastpoint.Y! ) ) * (180 / math.pi )"
arcpy.CalculateField_management(outFeatureClass, "Azimuth", expression2, "PYTHON") I get an arcgisscripting.ExecuteError: ERROR 000539: The confusing thing is I can paste the same code in the field calculator and it works fine. Thanks in advance for you help, Jason

Hello, Is it possible, via a widget or other means, to rotate the orientation of my map. By default north is at the top of the screen but I would like to be able to view my map facing E, S, W and other directions too. Thanks, Jason

Hi All, In my figures I make a habit to reference my background imagery source (Insert -> Dynamic Text -> Service Layer Credits). However, the service layer credits appear to be incorrect fairly often. For instance, when using Bing Imagery, sometimes World Imagery, this appears "Image courtesy of USGS 2012 InterAtlas State of Michigan". The problem is I work in Nevada. Any thoughts or solutions? Thanks, Jason

Thanks Caleb - this worked but I'd like your advice on modifying based on two scenarios: 1) How do I find/replace a single word instead of the entire text string? 2) It doesn't work if I have two rows of text. My text block says: Figure 1 (row 1) Project Overview (row 2). My code says: if elm.text == "Figure 1 Project Overview": Everything works fine when only one row of text it present but multiple lines do not work. Thanks, Jason

Hello, Does anyone have an example or know the function to use that will allow me to search/replace text elements in a map? An example is if I have 10 mxd's and I want to make a universal change to the text in my title block. Instead of opening each map and making the change one by one I'd like to have a tool that searches for a specific text string and replaces it with a new string. Thanks, Jason

Hello, Is there a way to assign default a label symbol and expression for each feature class I am working with? Much like setting up a representation to control symbology I would like to be able to add a layer to a map with a predefined, customized label. I found this posting from 2 years ago (http://gis.stackexchange.com/questions/7270/looking-for-a-way-to-change-the-default-shape-file-label-in-arcgis-10) and was hoping ESRI has made this possible in versions 10.1/10.2. Thanks, Jason

Greetings, Does anyone know of a way to import the colormap symbology file (.clr) from a raster to a polygon vector layer? I have converted a landcover raster file to a polygon and now I want to transfer over the symbology properties too. There are 100+ landcover types so I was hoping there was a way to batch import the colors to symbolize my polygon layers (a representation would be most preferable). Thanks in advance for your help, Jason

Denise, This applet is great and has been very helpful. However, I would like to expand the capabilities of the applet by adding two new buttons -> Turn off tracklog visibility and turn on tracklog visibility. I can turn on/off the tracklog itself but haven't been successful in programming a command to turn on/off the visibility. Application.Map.Layers("GPS Tracklog").visible=false This code works for other layers in my TOC but not the tracklog. Thanks, Jason

Has anyone found a solution to this problem? I would like to have a turn on and turn off tracklog visibility button so a user doesn't have to open the TOC to execute the command. I thought this or a similar variation would have worked but no luck so far: Application.Map.Layers("GPS Tracklog").visible=false Thanks, Jason

Hi Gareth, Thank you for for your advice. I tried your code (as well as lots of modifications to try and and get it to run) but I am still getting the error: Object doesn't support this property or method: 'objCatalog.IsPointIn', Source Text Unavailable Any ideas? Thanks, Jason Sub AddImagery
Dim objCatalog
Set objCatalog = Map.Layers("nv_24kquads_TEST")
Dim objPoint
Set objPoint = Application.CreateAppObject("point")
objPoint.X = GPS.X
objPoint.Y = GPS.Y
Dim objPolyNum
If objCatalog.IsPointIn(objPoint) Then
objPolyNum = objCatalog.Records.Fields("QUAD_NAME").value
Map.AddLayerFromFile("C:\Data\ArcPad\NV_FieldForms\Databases" & objPolynum & ".tif")
End If

Does the field size or field type affect checking out a feature class with more than 100 fields? I have a feature class >100 fields that is a mixture of text, number and date fields. I can successfully check out this layer if I reduce the total number of fields to <100 but if it the number exceeds 100 ArcMap crashes. However, when I created a generic feature class w/ 140 fields labeled 1,2,3,4....139,140, ArcMap allowed me to check out this data without crashing. What is going on? My field names for my original data contain no special characters and are all 30 characters or less. Does anyone have any advice on how to successfully check out my original data. I really don't want numbers/letters as my field typenames. Thanks, Jason

Hi ArcPad Users, Currently I'm creating ArcPad projects displaying only vector data and then a user has to manually add the correct NAIP imagery tile based upon their location. This is necessary because my survey areas are too large to do a bulk check out of my background imagery (get low memory warnings on GPS device). Has anyone written a script that, upon the click of a button, will add the correct background NAIP tile based on the GPS coordinates? I'm thinking it could add the .tiff image from my SD card and remove all other .tifs, if needed. I have an index/fishnet that matches the .tif name so if GPS coordinates intersect feature 14 in the index then add 14.tif from SD card. Just looking for a script I could modify or advice how to set this up. Thanks in advance for any help. Jason
