Has anybody done this? I want to dump the contents of the extent into KML. the only way I see to do this is to manually create kml from the spatial and meta data provided from the services. note that i don't believe that I want to call ESRI services from the kml, but rather to simply display the contents of my screen. Has anybody done this? Is my approach valid or is there some tool from ESRI that I can use to avoid manually creating KML?

I have seen examples of how to use python to open and manipulate an .mxd file. Is it possible to call a service from python to do something similar? I have a service that contains a basemap and a business layer. I want to call that service, locate the map to a specific extent (either through the call to the service itself or afterward in python), and then save the resulting map to a .pdf. Any thoughts/ideas? Thanks.

I have a requirement to add a button to a flex api map that will allow the user to save/export the map as an esri layer package. Thats the zip file containing data and imagery that ArcMap can generate. Has anybody done this in a Flex front end? I can easily export to a pdf or image file. Haven't seen anything about exporting to a package.

In the service directory, at the high level view of the service, you get a list of layers by name. these are the names that get sucked into the legend. In order to make legend readable, these layer names must be short. In my case, I have several layers with the same name now after I shortened them for the legend. In the service directory, you now have to click the layer name to open the layer page to see the description. So, its not entirely clear to the developer which service to use without having to drill down to the description. Not a huge problem but definately a "nice to have". I was hoping for a way to tell the flex component to not display the layer name or to somehow hide it on the results returned by the rest end point.

From what I can tell, the legend displays the following: A. Service name as defined by the name attribute in the layer definition in flex. B. Layer Name as defined in the .mxd C. The description you add on the symbology tab in the .mxd. I would like to NOT show B. I tried making my layer names null but that gave me NPR in flex. Additionally, I wanted my layer names to be fairly descriptive in the service directory and this level of descriptiveness is programmer level, not user so the items that appear in B are worthless to general users.

wow, I stand corrected. It would be nice if searching the samples for "legend" would give that sample!

I have heard all about the great new legend stuff in sp1. a search of the flex resource center's examples for the term "legend" shows NO results. Has anybody got a flex legend example(note, i'm not looking for flex viewer) that utilizes the new stuff? I do see the /legend endpoint in my service directory....

This may be very simple but I cannot seem to find an answer anywhere. I have a layer (.msd) that has a defined symbol. I use a QueryTask/Query to query that layer and then display the results on a graphics layer. How do i use the symbol defined on my layer ? I do not want to define a symbol in flex. I want to use the one i already defined in the .msd.

Interesting, ESRI seems to have no "design considerations" documentation per se. Anybody know about anything from a third party?

The word that i got from tech support is that we should add a new "esri_uid" column to each table that we wish to register. has to be Number(38), not null, unique. The Number(38) is key. Number won't work. Number(38) will.

We are new to ESRI and have existing database tables. We have been attempting, with some degree of success, to register them using sdelayer command line utility. We have found that many of our tables do not have the required field for the UID that is number(38), unique, and not null. some of our tables have a similar field of type number. We know that they are not registering properly if the type is number. We are considering adding a new field "esri_uid" to each table that we wish to register with the SDE. Has anybody else done this? Any suggestions and/or alternate solutions? Thanks in advance.

Please excust my ignorance, I am learning. When dealing with Flex API, there are a plethora of ???Layers??? that can be used. Ex: FeatureLayer, ArcGisDynamicMapServiceLayer, DynamicMapServiceLayer, etc. I understand the difference between tiled and dynamic (tiled is cached and dynamic is not), but in general, when do you use each type? Is there documentation somewhere that specifies? For instance, when would I need/want to use a FeatureLayer vs ArcGisDynamicMapServiceLayer?

Thanks Dasa. I'll probably roll w/ option 2. With regards to option 1, I wasn't aware that it was possible or encouraged to extend the API. Are there instructions for doing so? Is that all java code? What do you do, make your updates and somehow generate a new .swc file? Bear with me, i'm new to both Flex and Esri!

I think that I made a fundamental mistake. The ClassBreaksRenderer breaks up the data based on data in the layer itself. So trucks get a truck symbol, cars get a car symbol, bicycles get a bicycle symbol for example. Breaks are based on layer data. It looks like I will need to create 3 Graphics layers and use min/max Scale to determine which to use.
