The data were joined and the null values are non-matching records.

Did you try and calculate them via the field calculator? Right-click the column heading and click "Field Calculator..." and in the box write "0" (without the quotation marks). I did. The field calculator is grayed when I try.

I am trying to replace <Null> values with 0. I have selected these rows by attribute [field] "is null" but can't seem to find a way to actually replace the entries. Can someone tell me how I can replace the values ? I can't just remove the rows, I need the 0 information in them for a field calculation. Thanks a lot !

Thank you for your suggestion, the fuzzy tools are a promising tool ! I think that the concept of "edge" is rather hard to define, specially when you are analyzing its influence in the presence of certain species. Instead of trying the hard-boundary "buffer" I would consider using fuzzy logic. Take a look at the fuzzy tools in spatial analyst, they can give you a few ideas.

Hello, I amd using the NEAR tool to determine distances of certain points to plogons of interest, and would like to have the results added to the attribute table of the points. When I do this for more then 1 polygon the previous results in the attributes table are overwritten. Is it possible to do this so that the results are stacked or added in multiple columns to the attributes table. Thanks, Juliane

Dear ArcGIS people, I am trying to figure out how to examine the effect of forest edge habitat (independent variable) onto the abundance of certain species (dependent variable) associated with those edges. Abundance data consist of spatially distributed counts in a study area that includes the edge habitat and large spaces without it. It is believed that the habitat effect may include not only presence of the edge habitat, but also length of the edge and possibly width. Complexity of the shape of the edge may also play a role. I am looking at different ways to describe the habitat effect and have so far come up with: 1. Distance from the habitat edge 2. Presence of certain tree species within the immediate neighborhood of the dependent variable, defined as a round buffer. I am thinking of intersecting the buffers with the edge habitat feature, and to make the neighborhood succcessively larger in order to test if the effect of the edge habitat onto abundance may be dependent on the scale of observation. I was wondering if anyone has experience with such analysis, and what problems may arise. There are a lot of zeros in the data where no animals were found. I have not figured out yet how to describe the complexite of the edge itself. It appears that the Patch Analyst extension was written for some related questions, but I have not been able to download it for ArcGIS 10. Thank you very muh for any suggestions and best wishes, Juliane

Hello, I have tried to install Patch analyst for ArcGIS 10, but the installation goes only to step 6 inclusive of the installation guidelines (http://flash.laheheadu.ca/~rrempel/patch/ArcGIS10_fix.htm). Somebody raised this question last year but no answer came forward. Does anyone know how to solve this problem, or has anyone managed to install it correctly ? Thanks a lot, Juliane

Hello, thank you very muh for replying, I would like to create the water polygon, but how ? And also, could I use the extract by attribute function to achieve the same outcome, by extracting non-land values ? Regards and apologies that these questions are rather basic. Juliane Juliane, One more way, if you don't want to take the time to build the water polygon or don't already have one... You must have ArcGIS 10.0 minimum so you can access the Image Analysis Window. There is a mask function button on the window that performs the type of masking your looking for. i.e. Keep what is outside the mask. See Using the Mask button on the Image Analysis window Terminology differences: Clip GP tool - performs clip. Keeps what is inside the polygon Extract by Mask GP tool - peforms clip. Keeps what is inside the polygon Clip Function (Image Analysis Window) - performs clip. Keeps what is inside the polygon Mask Function (Image Analysis Window) - performs mask. Deletes what is inside the polygon. Regards, Eric
