Alter Field tool is to rename fields or field aliases for any feature class. I've already updated alias name in feature class. Since MXD layers have separate field mappings, the alias from the SDE fields are not reflecting in MXD layer. Hence thought of reading the layers from mxd and update the field alias. As Jeff Barrette said, I've tried the UpdateLayer method. This has to be executed with the flag symbology_only=False for updating the fields. When I executed this, I lost the symbology.

Have you found any other method to update the field alias in an mxd layer ? Our SDE contains the updated alias but not able to update in mxd. Well, I've spent too many hours trying to solve this issue. How you solved your issue.

Hi All, Recently we have updated some field alias in the SDE feature classes. After all the changes, when I look into the MXD, I could see that the updated field alias is not reflecting in the MXD layers. It still shows the old Alias name only. Somewhere I read the mxd layers are keeping a separate field mapping rather than the feature class field mapping. If this is the case, how can I update the mxd layer to reflect the updated fields. Have anyone experienced this kind of issues ? How can I bring the updated alias for those fields ? Any help will be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Even the script and the AlterField tool are throwing exceptions, I could see that the SDE feature classes got updated with the new alias provided. So I'm planning to ignore these errors and continue with the script. Thanks for the support.

I'm not even able to alter the alias for a field in GDB feature class Here is the sample code used to alter the alias name: fc = r"C:\Users\jose\Documents\ArcGIS\Default.gdb\World_Map" desc = arcpy.Describe(fc) arcpy.AlterField_management(fc, desc.AreaFieldName, new_field_alias="Shape Area") arcpy.AlterField_management(fc, desc.LengthFieldName, new_field_alias="Shape Length") I'm getting the following error: arcgisscripting.ExecuteError: ERROR 001625: Failed to alter field is nullable. Failed to execute (AlterField).

what additional permission is required for this ? I'm able to modify other fields using the AlterField tool. Also, I'm able to manually update the alias name of these fields ("SHAPE.LEN" and "SHAPE.AREA" ) by right clicking on the feature class. My ArcGIS Desktop Version is 10.3 and I'm connecting to Oracle using direct connection.

I have a set of feature classes in file gdb. while exporting these to SDE via arcpy, the field names "SHAPE_Length" and "SHAPE_Area" got changed to"SHAPE.LEN" and "SHAPE.AREA" respectively. There was alias name for both these fields in GDB which got missed in the SDE. I could right click on the feature class and from the properties window i can update the alias name of these fields. But the "Alter Field" tool in "Data Management Tools" fails to update the alias name for these fields. I've a lot of feature classes and its not practical to manually update the fields. Is there any way to preserve the field alias for these fields during the export? Or is there any other way to update the alias name programmatically. I've used the CopyFeatures_management in arcpy to export the feature classes. Thanks in advance.

Hi, We have a custom tool to extract an mpk file to a specific location. Below is the python code we used to extract the mpk file: import arcpy import os arcpy.env.overwriteOutput = True # set folder that contains packages to extract arcpy.env.workspace = "N:/geoprocessing" wrksp = arcpy.env.workspace arcpy.AddMessage("wrksp : " + wrksp ) arcpy.ExtractPackage_management(wrksp + "/J6.mpk", "J6") While executing this script as a tool in ArcMap, it is executing successfully with the following message: Running script extract... wrksp : N:/geoprocessing Completed script extract... Once we made this as a GP service and access it via browser, it fails. Following is the message retrieved: esriJobMessageTypeInformative: Running script extract... esriJobMessageTypeInformative: wrksp : D:\arcgisserver\directories\arcgissystem\arcgisinput\test_extract.GPServer\extracted\v101 esriJobMessageTypeInformative: Failed script extract... esriJobMessageTypeError: Traceback (most recent call last): File "D:\arcgisserver\directories\arcgissystem\arcgisinput\test_extract.GPServer\extracted\v101\my_toolboxes\module1.py", line 31, in arcpy.ExtractPackage_management(wrksp + "/J6.mpk", g_ESRI_variable_1) File "c:\program files\arcgis\server\arcpy\arcpy\management.py", line 7383, in ExtractPackage raise e ExecuteError: Failed to execute. Parameters are not valid. ERROR 000732: Input Package: Dataset D:\arcgisserver\directories\arcgissystem\arcgisinput\test_extract.GPServer\extracted\v101/J6.mpk does not exist or is not supported Failed to execute (ExtractPackage). esriJobMessageTypeError: Failed to execute (extract). We could see that the application is not able to detect the workspace while running as GP tool. Also, the workspace we used here is a mapped Network path. I tried even by changing this to C drive. That also fails. Any help regarding this is appreciable.

I've checked with the GIS Server Admin and got a response that the GP 64-bit background processing is not installed in that machine. In the server, C:\Python27, there are 3 sub folders : "ArcGIS10.1", "ArcGISx6410.1" and "ArcGISx6410.3". Only the last one have the python.exe and other related files. The remaining 2 have the only the "Lib" folder. The sys.path yields the following paths: C:\Python27\ArcGISx6410.3\Lib\site-packages C:\Windows\system32\python27.zip C:\Python27\ArcGISx6410.3\DLLs C:\Python27\ArcGISx6410.3\lib C:\Python27\ArcGISx6410.3\lib\plat-win C:\Python27\ArcGISx6410.3\lib\lib-tk C:\Python27\ArcGISx6410.3 C:\Program Files\ArcGIS\Server\bin C:\Program Files\ArcGIS\Server\arcpy C:\Program Files\ArcGIS\Server\ArcToolBox\Scripts

Hi, We have some custom GP services which were successfully working in an ArcGIS Server 10.1. ArcGIS Desktop was also available in that machine. Recently the desktop has been uninstalled and the server has been upgraded to 10.3. Now these GP services are not working. Following is the error log I got from the ArcGIS Server Manager. Traceback (most recent call last): File "D:\arcgisserver\directories\arcgissystem\arcgisinput\hello.GPServer\extracted\v101\my_toolboxes\hello.py", line 8, in import arcpy, sys, os, datetime, glob, ConfigParser File "c:\program files\arcgis\server\arcpy\arcpy\__init__.py", line 31, in import arcpy.sa File "c:\program files\arcgis\server\arcpy\arcpy\sa\__init__.py", line 24, in from . import Functions as __Functions ImportError: cannot import name Functions Failed to execute (hello). Failed to execute (Hello). I doubt this may be due to the installation problem with python. So I tried to import arcpy in a sample python program and got the following error: Traceback (most recent call last): File "module1.py", line 19, in <module> import arcpy File "C:\Program Files\ArcGIS\Server\arcpy\arcpy\__init__.py", line 31, in <module> import arcpy.sa File "C:\Program Files\ArcGIS\Server\arcpy\arcpy\sa\__init__.py", line 29, in <module> __all__ += __ParameterClasses.__all__ AttributeError: 'module' object has no attribute '__all__' The sys.path yields the following: ['', 'C:\\Python27\\ArcGISx6410.3\\Lib\\site-packages', 'C:\\Windows\\system32\\python27.zip', 'C:\\Python27\\ArcGISx6410.3\\DLLs', 'C:\\Python27\\ArcGISx6410.3\\lib', 'C:\\Python27\\ArcGISx6410.3\\lib\\plat-win', 'C:\\Python27\\ArcGISx6410.3\\lib\\lib-tk', 'C:\\Python27\\ArcGISx6410.3', 'C:\\Program Files\\ArcGIS\\Server\\bin', 'C:\\Program Files\\ArcGIS\\Server\\arcpy', 'C:\\Program Files\\ArcGIS\\Server\\ArcToolBox\\Scripts'] Can anyone help me in identifying the issue.

Hi, Is is possible to update the snapping tolerance in WPF application ? We are able to provide the snap distance in the xaml code. But not able to update on the fly. We tried to bind this to a View Model , but is fails. Even though there is a function Editor.SetSnapDistance() available, we are not able to make this working. Have anybody tried these options?
