Protecting PII and Achieving Geographic Accuracy

The Coronavirus pandemic has revealed a salient need for geographically accurate location information, and an equally salient need to protect personally identifiable information (PII) for confirmed cases. Uber’s H3, a hierarchal hexagonal binning library, can be used to create a multiple resolution hexagon tessellation based on a minimum count threshold. This density based multi-resolution tessellation achieves the maximum geographic accuracy possible while still preserving PII.
