I am new to ArcGIS and the sdk, and I am trying to figure out some of the basic principles. In the Runtime SDK for .Net I am presented with the concept of the “Local Server”. I need to use this in order to perform some operations, like importing an image or a shapefile. I do not understand this – what is the benefit of creating a server, that can only be accessed locally?

In order to import an image from file, it seems I need to have a world file in the same directory as the image file. If it is not there, the image will not be shown. How can I go about importing an image, if I don’t have an world file? Can I let the user of my app point out the place where the image should be placed on the map, and use that information instead of a worldfile?

In order to import an image as a layer data source, I need to use the “Local Server” concept to serve the image to a dynamic map service layer. My experience is that this service is quite slow when displaying the images on the map. It takes a while for it to calculate the image when changing the mapview extent, resulting in a not so good user experience. Is that something I just have to accept, or can I do something about it? Is there another way to import an image?

How can I import a CAD (eg. DWG) file to a map layer using the SDK, similarly to importing a shapefile? If the SDK itself cannot do it, is there some kind of SDK extension or redistributable tool that will be able to do it? I guess the process would require a georeferencing step. I know there is an Data Interoperability extension to ArcGIS for Server that might do it, but redistributing ArcGIS for Server with our software just for this feature seems like overkill, if at all possible.
