I actually recived some data in a FGD that also contained some good and appropriate metadata. I started to create a web map so as to publish the map internally as an example. When configuring the pop-up for one of the layer with the metadata, I find that I am not sure how to access a layers metadata to use in labels, texts, and pop-ups. Is there a method to gain access to the metadata "data" to be used as a varible and the like? James

Please count me as a mentor and collabortor in teaching, facilitating, and exposing GIS and Non GIS students to more industry-specific GIS application solutions; such as Business, SCM, Insurance, Health, transportation, government, etc. It is one thing to learn how to split a polygon or geocode some address, and it seems to me that the real juice in GIS is understanding the how and the purpose of using the vast number of geoprocessing tools. Thanks for posting, James

following up on this issue, I am at ArcGIS Pro 2.8.3, ArcServer 10.9. I download the UN water sample asset package and database. The Asset Package is at model 4.1 and the Database network is at Model 5. IN trying to upgrade the asset package, the tool does not work as there is not script associated with it. IN trying to run the script from within a python file, I get errors that the module does not work. I really want to use an work with the UN Utility network, but I no longer believe I have the knowledge or the resources to proceed. It has been one thing after another, several chats and calls to ESRI tech support, and reading several posts, articles and such all with conflicting information. I may need to wave the white flag. Sorry, just need to vent. James

Hey Vicky, I want to thank you for the help you have provided. I think for the most part, it opened my eyes to realize I need a lot of help, in the hand holding kind. You have been so gracious with your time and knowledge, and I feel that I need to reach out the esri tech support. Again, thanks for all your input. I will post on this thread what I find out. James

Vicky, Yeah, that help clear up alot. I currently have version 4.1. Though when I tried to run the upgrade asset package, the tool failed. To clarify an earlier statement- the arcgis pro 2.8.1 did not seem to allow the untools to load into the python clone. This is reason I was advised to go back to 2.8. At this time, Now that I know about the UN versions, I think I need to start over. I have reviewed the steps you have listed. I am considering an upgrade my ArcGIS Pro install to latest. -done Check to be sure UNtools and dlt packets are in clone environment -done Access the UN utility network and download latest. -done check the verion of the UN model - done Upgrade Asset Package - Failed I stopped at this point. Not sure what to do from this point. Interestingly, when I try to open/Edit the script for "Upgrade Asset Package", there is no script. James Sorry for the edits, but I was able to run the upgrade asset package tool using a python script, and got the following results:

Vicky, I am currently on ArcPro version 2.8.0. I was at ArcPro version 2.8.1, but with the help of ESRI tech support, came to see that the Water NU would not work with version higher than 2.8.0, though I am not sure if this is still the case. The enterprise server is at version 10.9. The UN version is - Water Distribution Data Management For ArcGIS Enterprise v1.1 - this (I believe) is the Utility network extension through Portal. Is this different from what you are referencing as the UN model version? When you referred to a UN model version, I began to wonder if I am as lost as I seem to be in this effort. Side note- I run the ArcPro on my laptop and using a vpn connection, consume the client's Pro license as a named user, along with the Network Extension. Any light shed on this subject would be greatly appreciated. James

Vicky, Thanks so much for you help and patience. From you comments above, I understand that after adding or extending a transmission line (or any line), the action of validation as well as update subnetwork tool will the subnetwork name, tier name, etc. This make sense, though I have not replicated this process in the sample data set. Trying either the create fire hydrant and/or create customer service task as provided, the fitting is created as well as the valve and hydrant. After validation, the water (service) line for the hydrant just add disappears. running the update Subnetwork tool seems to either fail or crashes the ArcGIS pro program. As I mention, I am trying to get to know and learn to work with the Utility Network using the sample data in a FGDB. Should I move the sample data into an enterprise environment? Could/ Would that possible work better? Thanks for all your help. I may not be the sharpest tool in the shed at the onset, but once sharpened, I stay sharpened. Thanks James

Vicky, Thanks for the response. your explanation does help, though I am still not quite certain I grasp the complete concept the the Utility Network. I suspect I am making it more complicated than it really is. One issue I am confused with, is using the sample data, I am extending a water line (a transmission line that is also shown as a Tier item (Naperville Distribution)). The line is saved in the Water line layer as a transmission line, but does not show up in the Tier. I suspect the extended or added line attributes (is connected, subnetwork names ) need to also be appropriately edited. Unfortunately, these items do not seem to be editable. Does the topology need to be disabled? At the moment I am working in an FGDB environment.

I am working to learn and understand the Utility Network. Its complicated, but I do seem to be making some progress here and there. My current issue is getting my head wrapped around Tiers vs Subnetworks. Is it correct to think of Tiers (and Tier Groups) organized vertically while Subnetworks are organized horizontally? My organization has been tasked with combining three or more small water and sewer systems (from small local government jurisdictions). Currently they are separately managed and operated by each respective jurisdiction, but the plan is to turn over management and operation (and perhaps ownership) to a single "regional authority". So, should / could there be one domain network set up for the regional system and each jurisdiction be set up as it own subnetwork (named for the particular jurisdiction)? If there is a need for multi subnetworks within a given jurisdiction, then each would be named uniquely using the name of the jurisdiction. Am I thinking about the above scenario correctly? Please feel free to make suggestions or provide advice to set this utility network differently. Actually any suggestion or advice would be welcomed. James

Hey Paul, Thanks for the response. Working in the database is not my strongest suit, but I do understand what your saying. I will work on creating a database user for this purpose. I will also delete the service area from within the dataset, keeping the service area FC that is outside the dataset. Finally, I am using version 2.8. Through an earlier issue, I worked with ESRI tech support and we discovered that the UN tools will not load at version 2.8.1. I will follow up on this thread after accomplishing the first two bullets above. James Here is a follow-up: I was able (I think) to create a new database user (un_dbo) with the correct privileges. Once this new schema was created I copied the data from the sde into it (the un_dbo schema). Should the owner of the database be the same as the new user/schema? When I ran the stage utility network tool again, it seems to go further, but ends with the following error as shown in attached pics. The error indicates that my geodatabase is not updated. When looking into this more, I do not see that it needs to be updated. I'm sure it is something I have done incorrectly. I admit that I am a bit over my head in working with the Postsql and database. Any help, suggestion, or advice you can offer will be greatly appreciated. James

I am in a testing and learning mode with the Utility Network. Though there have been many bumps in the road, I continue to make (albeit slow) progress. Right now I am having issues with the Stage Utility Network tool. While this tool successfully ran in the FGDB environment, errors happen when using this tool on the exact same database, though in an enterprise environment. The first error was resolved by changing the database connection from the SDE user to a superuser (using postgres). The current error being encountered is as follows. The service area FC being used is located inside the dataset, but the same thing happens if the service area FC is located outside the dataset. Suggestions? Also, I have been looking at videos and youtubes and written documents to understand the UN better. Any thoughts, ideas, or suggestions on good best practice info on UN would be greatly appreciated. Derek, I kinda knew that already, but just wanted to be sure I hadn't missed anything. I like the idea of the Query View. I believe this would work well and I also believe I could connect to the actual database in PostSQL using Excel. If this is true, then perhaps the specific staff members could update the tables and these updates would be reflected in the query view. Thanks for the nudge James

Im not sure what (if any) would be the best way to go: Data coming from PostSQL database Publishing the feature datasets to Portal (10.9) from database. We have some tables and related tables in database, these can be published as well Data in tables changes and needs to be updated periodically We would like to be able to connect to the table data using excel so non-GIS staff can edit as needed. Should we try to set and use excel to connect directly to PostSQL. (ODBC connection?) IS there a way to use excel to connect to the published data (Portal)? SO far we have not found one. Any suggestions, advice, or direction will be most appreciated. James Armstrong

Josh, Thanks, I would appreciate the script if you don't mind sharing it. I did go back in my notes and it seems that after publishing a Hosted Feature layer, the following steps can be taken to create an anonymous download setup. 1. Share the feature layer with everyone. 2. Share the FL with the content group that is set up as the data sharing Enterprise Site. 3. Then, go to the site/application as a signed in Creator and download the formats that you want to have shared. This act of doing it as a Creator somehow opens the downloads up for anonymous download. I noted that it creates files of each format in the portal content, usually under the folder where the feature layer is located. It does work!. Hope this helps and again, please send the python script you mentioned. I would be interested in checking it out.. James Armstrong

Thanks for the insight. I may be mistaken, but I believe that Enterprise sites allow for annonymous download now. It was an issues, but a several weeks ago there was a fix....(cant recall but it may have been updating to 8.1.1. The issue still remins that only as a hosted feature layer can the download be done via the enterprise sites. Still you suggestion has some merit as it acutally may solve another somewhat realted issue we are having. thanks again, James
