Thanks for the response Dan, I have added points on the image to show where the start- or end-points are. The start- and end-points correspond with where the line feature touches the boundary of the polygon circle. However, in the data, the start- and end-points do not follow a particular pattern or direction. For my purposes, it doesn't matter if I am comparing a start-point of line1 to an end-point of line2. All that matters is that the point of line1 is being compared to the point of line2 that is first encountered going counter-clockwise around the circle's perimeter. In the Picture in my edited post I would want to compare the two points with the arrow drawn between them.

Hey everyone: I am trying to determine the angle between two intersecting lines. However, I need the angle to be from the start point of line1 to the start- or end-point of line2 - whichever is the next point going in a counter-clockwise direction around the circle's perimeter (see diagram at bottom of question). My steps so far have been: 1) I found the intersection points and saved them to a point file 2) I created a 10cm buffer around the points (0.1 metres) 3) I clipped line1 and line2 to the buffer 4) I calculated the start- and end-points of line1 and line2 as: with arcpy.da.UpdateCursor("line", ('X0a','Y0a','X1a','Y1a', "SHAPE@")) as cursor: for row in cursor: row[0] = row[4].firstPoint.X row[1] = row[4].firstPoint.Y row[2] = row[4].lastPoint.X row[3] = row[4].lastPoint.Y cursor.updateRow(row) 5) I created separate fields and calculated their values as: dx = !X1a!-!X0a! dy = !Y1a!-!Y0a! dxa= !X1b!-!X0b! dya= !Y1b!-!Y0b! r = math.sqrt(math.pow(!dx!, 2) + math.pow(!dy!, 2)) ra = math.sqrt(math.pow(!dxa!, 2) + math.pow(!dya!, 2)) c = math.asin(abs((dxdya - dydxa))/(r*ra)) / math.pi * 180 c is the angle between the points, however, it is not always the angle I need. I need the angle from a point on line1 to the nearest point on line2 going counter-clockwise around the circle's perimeter. There is probably a really easy solution for this, but, I just haven't been able to figure it out. Any help is greatly appreciated. I am using ArcGIS 10.2.

Thanks for the posts Dan and Xander: I am going to work through the information you have provided me so far (I just got in to work). Xander was exactly right in his description of the problem. The dotted red line in his second image is similar to the red line in the above image. The green line in Xander's third image is similar to the green lines in my image. The only missing line type would be the blue lines in the centre of my image where a highway overpass crosses a road and has guard rails along the side (green and red lines are the same). Note: the light green polygon would be similar to the blue polygon in Xander's final image. Thanks for the responses. I will go through Xander's work flow and get back to you. Joe.

Hey everyone: I have been trying to connect start points and end points of guard rails along the sides of roads. Of course, this is more complicated than converting points to lines because I need to prevent the lines from crossing roads but keep them as close to the roads as possible when the roads are not perfectly straight. I was wondering if it is possible to do this with a Least Cost Path model. Is LCP capable of connecting multiple start points with multiple end points based on an ID field? This would allow me to assign very high costs to roads, lower costs to the area within 1 metre of roads, and higher costs as you go further away from the road. I have about 3400 start and end points for the guard rails. Also, if anyone has any better ideas of how to do this workflow, I would be grateful for any advice. Thanks, Joe.

Honestly, my boss just found out that if we keep clicking the 'Zoom To' button in the popups that it will keep zooming in to infinity. He thinks this is an issue. Unfortunately, changing the visible extent does not solve this -- it will keep zooming in to the point even after the base map and point are no longer visible. I agree with you, they can just zoom out, but it is what it is. I was hoping there was a way to change the 'Zoom To' button's settings, but, it is likely not possible. Thanks anyways, Joe.

Hey everyone: I know it is possible to set extents in which the user can see features in ArcGIS Desktop/Online environments. However, I was wondering if it is possible to set the maximum possible and minimum possible zoom extents in ArcGIS Desktop/Online? For example, even if the map reader continuously scrolls the mouse wheel or hits the +/- (zoom in/zoom out) buttons, the map will stop zooming in/out at a certain scale. Any help is greatly appreciated. Cheers, Joe

Thanks for the reply. I thought it might need to be scripted. I was just hoping someone had made the script already and I was just wording it wrong in my Google search. It was a long shot, but, worth a try. Suppose I know what I have to look forward to. Cheers.

Hey: So, I have received a shapefile which contains the start and end points for guardrails in an area. I need to convert the start and end points to a line that connects them - this alone is easy. However, I do not want the line connecting the points to be straight, I want it to follow the curvature of the roads. Further, I want the offset the guardrails have from the road to be maintained in the output line feature class. I presently have 3 feature classes to work with: 1) a roads line feature class; 2) a guardrail end point feature class; and, 3) a guardrail start point feature class. Basically, if I have a start point a (x1, y1) and end point a (x3, y5) and a road segment starting at x1, y2 which turns 90 degrees at x2, y2 and ends at x2, y5, I would like to create a line to connect start point a and end point a that turns 90 degrees at x3, y1 rather than taking a direct line path. I can't imagine there is a tool that comes with ArcGIS to do this, but, has anyone found a way to automate this procedure? What about if the offset from the road varies (e.g. the start point is 1 metre from the road and the end point is 1.5 metres from the road)?

Worked perfectly. Note: the tool is called 'polygon to line(Data Management)'. I just did a select and create layer from selection after this to get the boundary lines as a separate layer.

I have tried this but, I still have to cover the border from the district layer and, thus, keep the dissolved layer's border the same size. This makes me lose detail at the island's natural boundaries. Doing a dissolve and overlaying the polygon, in my experience, only works for political (straight) boundary lines and for changing color - not size. I would like to change the size of the boundary lines touching the ocean but not the ones touching land. Sorry if I wasn't specific enough before. Thanks for the response though.

Hey: I am creating a map of an island and I need to symbolize the island by district. I would like to change the size of the district boundaries between the districts, but I do not want to change the size of the boundary at the edge of the island (where the island meets the sea). For example, I want the symbology of three sides of a polygon to be different than the fourth. Is this possible? Cheers.

Thanks guys, I did create 3 layers from the single layer - it took a while, but it worked. I just used a marker and an offset symbol to display if there was other features (I didn't do the house idea, it was too confusing to read with two other symbols in some places). I did not know of the offset feature, but it is very helpful when a data point is contained in multiple databases. Anyways, thank you for the help, I know it was kind of a newbie question but I think I should get a good grade. Cheers, Joe

Hi, I'm trying to create a map of towns, towns with airports, and towns with hospitals for an area (it's a school project). I am given a .dbf file with all of the towns I need to display, but I am only given a list of the towns with airports and hospitals. Basically, I have selected all of the towns with airports and hospitals and created a new layer from their data. I then changed the symbols from a house to a airplane or cross depending on what they represent. The problem is, the outline of the house shows up behind the cross and airplane symbols. Is there anyway to stop the original symbols for the new data from showing up behind the other symbols? Thanks in advance for any help, it is appreciated. Joe
