Add a handler for the InitializationFailed event on each layer in your map. XAML
<esri:Map x:Name="MyMap" >
<esri:ArcGISDynamicMapServiceLayer ID="MyLayer"
Url="http://sampleserver1.arcgisonline.com/ArcGIS/rest/services/Specialty/ESRI_StateCityHighway_USA/MapServer"
InitializationFailed="DynLayer_InitializationFailed"/>
</esri:Map>
C# void DynLayer_InitializationFailed(object sender, EventArgs e)
{
Layer lyr = sender as Layer;
MyMap.Layers.Remove(lyr);
} I know this does not really answer the question as to checking if the service is running or not but should prevent the error and will remove the broken layer from the map. have already done that but the point is that if your service is down the layer initialization won't even begin, the exception will happen while map service initialization, which is what I'm trying to capture.

double checked all the points mentioned Jennifer, the data is not null for the attribute LEASELEFT. the data type is numeric if Oracle db 10g and I'm using int32 in my unique value renderer for it. any new pointers will be very helpful

no it does not work. I mentioned in my previous reply also that only default symbology comes on the map. there are 75 other shapes with LEASELEFT value of 1, they don't get the desired symbology.

Using the below code in my xaml file. The "LEASELEFT" attribute is a numeric field in Oracle db. The spatial data is of type polygon. Only the default symbolgy comes on the feature layer, however, I have atleast 75 shapes with attribute LEASELEFT having value 1. <esri:UniqueValueRenderer x:Name="UniqueValueRenderer" Attribute="LEASELEFT" >
<esri:UniqueValueRenderer.DefaultSymbol>
<esriSymbols:SimpleFillSymbol Fill="Blue" BorderBrush="Green" BorderThickness="2"/>
</esri:UniqueValueRenderer.DefaultSymbol>
<esri:UniqueValueInfo >
<esri:UniqueValueInfo.Value>
<sys:Int32>1</sys:Int32>
</esri:UniqueValueInfo.Value>
<esri:UniqueValueInfo.Symbol>
<esriSymbols:SimpleFillSymbol Fill="Red" BorderBrush="Green" BorderThickness="2"/>
</esri:UniqueValueInfo.Symbol>
</esri:UniqueValueInfo>
</esri:UniqueValueRenderer> finally binding it to the feature layer <esri:FeatureLayer ID="MyFeatureLayer" Url="Map layer url" Renderer="{StaticResource UniqueValueRenderer}" />

I have a feature layer which i'm binding to a unique value renderer in the xaml file. the result is that nothing comes up on the map. have tried to bind the unique value renderer in the xaml.cs file also on layer initialization complete event also but no result on the map. I took the xaml code from the ESRI resources help section but it doesn't seem to work. Also, i already have a unique value renderer on this layer in the Map document that I created using the ArcMap. i'm trying to change the rendering depending on user preference. Any help is welcome.

hi, i have a map layer with symbology as hollow and border color of the hollow symbol is given by a unique value renderer. I'm using a feature layer to filter some of the spatial data. the feature layer converts the null fill color provided by the map layer to black. please reply back if anybody else has faced the issue and resolved it, any pointers would be helpfull.

hi, i am using a feature layer to filter out certain amount of spatial data from one of the layers on my map. the issue is that on load of map i have to show all the information. this causes a large amount of memory utilization by the browser and it hangs sometimes. the difference between the memory acquired by the browser when i add all the information on the feature layer and don't add any is around 180,000 kb. please suggest a solution. thanks

Hi, I am facing a issue with the ScreenToMap() method of the API. Whenever a user clicks on the map I'm capturing that event and performing a ScreeToMap() conversion on that point. Most of the time the conversion is correct, however, sometimes the returned value is wrong. I have confirmed the wrong values by running a mouse hover event on the map which gives me the current x,y co-ordinates corresponding to the current mouse location on the map. The map is in WGS1984. If anybody else has ever faced the same issue or a relative issue please share your experience. thanks Jaskirat
