Hi I have created a mapbook using DDP (around 90 pages), is there a way to create a simple index page that gives the page number and the corresponding page name? (I'm using 10.0). Many thanks

Dear ArcGIS community, I tried searching online for answers but could not find any. I would like to ask if a polyline lies on the boundary of 2 polygons, how will the intersect tool handle the output result? Will the polyline intersect both polygons or either one? One example is a road link with residential landuse on its left and industrial landuse on its right. Will the road link intersect with the residential or the industrial polygon? Thank you. Joel This is the geocoding forum, maybe try the geoprocessing forum? Maybe you should just try it and see what results you get.

I think the shapefile you have has a .prj file. Try renaming it, then repeating the steps. The data you uploaded didn't include a .prj file, so the shapefile that I was using had no coordinate system. Whatever coordinate system is in that prj file isn't correct. Melita Quite amazing that this thread has replies from someone at esri and it has nothing to do with geocoding. When a question that actually relates to geocoding appears, esri staff are nowhere to be seen.

Thanks again Andy; So I get all these options when creating a new style, single field, city state, zip +4 . So all these are defined inside the US addressed xml file. I change what i need inside that file. So what if I wanna make a custom one, there is no way to point the geocoder/locator to that xml? No worries. Make a copy of the US one, make your customizations and then put it back in the arcgis/locators folder (obviously call it something different). Those styles will then appear in the GP style choices. You can find some custom files on these forums that are used in this way - you download the .loc.xml and put it in the folder specified above, you will then see that style in the list. I hope this is clear, try downloading a custom style from this forum and running through the steps I have listed above; that should give you a good understanding of the process.

Hi Andy, many thanks for you reply. So those xmls are creade when we share the published service, so they go outside the original DB. So when I rebuild the geocoder, how can I make it point to the created xml file? The style file is just used to build the locator; all of the rules and grammar will then be contained within the address locator once it has been built. Make sure your edited .loc.xml file is contained within Arcgis/desktop/locators, then in ArcMap when you select "new - address locator" the GP dialog appears and there you can select a style. This style is the .loc.xml contained in the location specified above, to test that your edited style is the one being used - change the line in the xml file that relates to the title - your changes should then appear in the style list in the GP tool.

I have spent the last few weeks trying to build a geocoder and I am hugely underwhelmed by the solutions provided by esri. The fact that such basic functionality such as geocoding to unit level is not available in the core product is quite frankly ridiculous. The white paper "Customizing Locators in ArcGIS 10" is such a badly written document that seems to purposefully make things difficult. Trawling through forum posts to find locator styles that might work is not a good use of anyone's time. This needs to be fixed. As I have seen mentioned elsewhere, esri want people to use their online geocoding service (SaaS) so intentionally make it difficult for users to build custom locators. Also the sporadic nature of replies in the geocoding forum from esri staff is quite baffling, they may answer a question that is unrelated to geocoding, but when it comes to answers that are in the correct forum they are absent. What are peoples thoughts?

Hey guys; Friday, great mood hopefully. So Arc creates these .loc.xml file for each locator. They basically allow you to specify common spelling of words. But am not sure how they get published on the server when publishing the geocoder service. I also tried to play a bit with those files locally, and somehow the changes don't get noticed in ArcMap when searching for stuff. Any ideas? Thanks; That is a locator style you are referring to, which is used to build the locator. If you are editing these files for your own use, you will need to rebuild your address locators using these style files. When you have your locator built as you specify then you publish it as a service. If you need some incomplete and badly written documentation check out: Customizing Locators in ArcGIS 10 (white paper)

Thanks! I was able to create the single address locator after exporting it to a new geodatabase and feature class. Excellent, glad I could help. Andy

I also tried exporting the data to a new feature class but the joined data didn't export with it. All that was exported was the original data from the Parcel shp "but the joined data didn't export with it" - So you are having issues with your join, this is your problem. Try making the join and exporting to a new geodatabase and using that feature class. I had a similar problem and I traced it to a bad join within model builder, this was after writing a script to flatten my data using dictionaries and cursors.

I was able to create an address locator Dual Range with Street Midline data, but now I'm trying to create a single house address locator using city parcel data (Polygons). I joined a data table of city addresses to my Parcels layer using a PIN (Property ID Number) in order to have St_Num, St_Name, Etc. When I try creating the locator, I have Parcels as the Primary table and from what I read, the data table has all neccessary credentials to be executed, but I can never run the tool because it's telling me that I still do not have enough reference data. I'm wondering why this is and what I should try to do to get this to run. Please Help! Your problem probably lies with your join. Have you exported the joined data to a new feature class?

I have tried making a query table and using various types of join but the address locator always gives - "ERROR 000039 Not enough reference data tables for this style." If there is any type of join within my data, this is the error that appears - when I use only the main data table the locator can be created without a problem. Domains don't work, joins don't work, query tables don't work. Is there any solution to this problem?

When I attempt to use a joined table within my address locator setup, the locator fails and gives an error that states that I do not have enough data sources for this locator style. The tables are not alias or alternate name, the simply have either unit number or postal code (2 joined tables). Is there a way around this?

The data I am using to build an address locator is structured in a standard relational database model structure. Some of the fields that I need to provide e.g. Left City or Place are stored as codes in my feature class that point to an external lookup table which stores the real text name. I do not want to flatten the data as the geodatabase is used for other tasks, is updated fairly regularly and is a large dataset. Coded domains are not recognised by the address locator and simply return the original code in the search results, which is not very useful. I thought about using views but unfortunately this is not possible using a file geodatabase - only when using SDE. Do I have any other options, without flattening the data using a python script? (This is what I am trying to avoid). Many thanks
