Totally agree with this. There should be far better tools available for promoting dev work to staging and production environments.

Hi Marc, thanks for the speedy reply - much appreciated. I'll give it a try, but I'm actually starting to think I may need to update the portal, from 10.7.x I can't see the /updateUserLicenseType method on the /arcgis/sharing/rest/portals/self endpoint. Can you please confirm this, if running a newer version of Portal? thanks again Gareth

Hi there @Thomas_Z2 I saw your posting on the updateUserLicenseType Rest API call, and was wondering if you would mind sharing a code snippet of sorts to help me out here. I've been trying to find the way to update a user on the fly via the back-end, and this seems to be the way to do it - and as you've mentioned, Esri have not really documented anything about it! I've tinkered with the url request ../arcgis/sharing/rest/portals/self/updateUserLicenseType?... but I'm yet to find a valid url that actually works. I'll also take a look at the Python approach you've mentioned, but I'd rather hit it with a Rest call to be honest. Any help truly appreciated (in either Rest, or Python cases) thanks in advance Gareth

Thanks John.. I had a chat with our local Esri guys here in Oz, and they said the same thing. I'm actually trying to publish our Non-federated (standalone) ArcGIS REST Services up in a new Portal that is not hosted by us, but another division in our organisation. We don't actually have a portal to use, just someone else's so I'm trying to avoid having to move data around between two GDBs or Datastores etc. We have a bunch of map services - which I'd like people to be able to download from. Seems simple enough - but for some reason Portal/Enterprise has a whole level of abstraction sitting on it that is continually frustrating to deal with. I spent yesterday moving over my initial site development to the Hub - so far so good, but ideally I'd really like this in Portal, and have the ability to publish non-federated services to the Site, and have download capability enabled. I don't want to have to create Hosted Layers to do this as I then have to worry about data syncing and moving from u-federated to federated data storage etc... I think that's how I'm reading this?? It's so convoluted some of this stuff

Andrew This is exactly the question I'd love to see answered. I can pull data for one off (single item) display in Notes, and or Text types, but to have a series of values populate a list and not rely on the list being defined in the choices, or external choices is key here.. any advice truly appreciated thanks Gareth

Is there any plans to introduce such a feature in the future? Creating a choices list from a Rest Service would be really beneficial to us.

OK - Playing the devil's advocate here, but really this is about getting some responses and feedback on our current predicament... Case it point (current set up) No federation with Entereprise, all AGS Nodes are standalone Secured map services/REST being consumed by our Geocortex applicaton (although this could be any WAB, or Experience Builder now). This is not confined to just geocortex. Have a number of users (500+ trained) currently editing fire shapes and operations data in our 'editable' sites We have 5000+ Users viewing data in our other 'non-editable' sites Seamless between Edit and Read only sites/applications (there is currently no distinction or restrictions) We operate on external network ie. This is cross agency and needs to be available outside of our network Proposal We would like to implement Enterprise and federate our AGS nodes with it. Geocortex respects the Enterprise/portal licencing model, so no issues here. It works well. Enterprise restricts access to our Sensitive REST endpoints We need to now use Named User priveleges to Edit Costs - 500 x $280 approx (Editor NU level) = $140,000 to EDIT IN THE SAME SITE as our current arrangement This is purely Enterprise we are talking about here. We have paid for it, and now just want to use it across our geocortex sites (as a first port of call), but we simply cannot afford to federate with it! Is anyone else having the same issues we are? I can understand why there is a cost to edit in an AGOL world, but why in an self-hosted architecture? cheers Gareth

I think this is a great question Paul. We too have a pretty transient population of Field workers being in the Fire industry, and need some more 'generic' accounts that can be shared around - say a Work Centre or Depot. We'd even prefer the notion of a single email address to the local GIS Officer or someone local to the region that will manage their users and the devices as they are deployed.

Steven, I've just stumbled on this thread, and it would be great if you could share the icons with me. I'm putting together some archictectural diagrams for our Portal installation plans Thanks

Hi everyone. Bad news. We have installed 10.2 for Desktop, and server, and it looks like this issue still isn't fixed. It might actually be worse now. My ArcCatalog window has stopped responding a couple times when trying to right-click a service to find it's properties. I suspect that ESRI won't hot-fix this problem, because it's not actually fixed yet. I agree! We've moved to 10.2 and are still wrestling with the speed of admin, and even hitting up our rest end points. ~10 seconds to access the rest services list is SLOW! we have 4 servers clustered with a UNC path. We are now going to set up a test of 2 to 4 servers running separately with local path settings and caches and see if that 1. speeds things up from admin perspective, and 2. can handle the load we need it to!! this is extremely frustrating...
