I followed the procedure in the scripting error report mentioned by Stephe and was unsuccessful. I tried all four versions of security level (Medium,Medium-High) and ArcGIS Geoprocessing Tools Scripting Error (Enable,Disable) and was careful to reboot ARCGis each time. I think I'll hang up this problem for awhile. Too time intensive. "The next day, I did a little bit more research and testing. Once I knew what to search for, I found that someone had noticed the pattern and posted a blog article about the error in January of 2011. The solution was to decrease one's Internet Explorer security settings from the default level of Medium-high to Medium. I tried this, and problem solved. I could view metadata and then open a geoprocessing tool without error. Yeah!!! Note: If you want to do this, be sure to adjust the settings in the 32-bit version of Internet Explorer, not the 64-bit version. Only one issue, I now had medium level security settings. Probably not that big of a deal for me since I do not use the 32-bit version of Internet Explorer (except in ArcMap), but this would not fly in a standard work environment. I decided to figure out exactly which setting was causing the problem. After some experimenting, I found it. The setting Allow previously unused ActiveX controls to run without prompt needs to be set to Enable. If you want to change this setting, then open the 32-bit version of Internet Explorer by going to Start --> All Programs --> Internet Explorer. The 64-bit version will say Internet Explorer (64-bit). Once Internet Explorer opens, go to Tools --> Internet Options, and click on the Security tab. For your Internet settings, click on Custom level..., and scroll down until you find the ActiveX controls and plug-ins. Change Allow previously unused ActiveX controls to run without prompt from Disable toEnable. Click Ok, Yes, and OK, and then close Internet Explorer. This of course requires you to have permission to change these settings."

You offer hope for the hobbyist. If python routines can substitute for geoprocesswing nd perhaps more, a $10K professional licene my not be needed.

Thanks Rebecca, but resetting all three didn't do the trick. Looking harder at the error messge, I decided to rename MdDigContent.htm. A reboot of ArcGIS created a new one, but the problem is still the same!

Tries to generate a near table for a point shapefile to a polyline shapefile as shown in the picture. No near points or distances are returned - the table is empty. Any ideas? Running 10.3.

Thanks for the info, but I'm new to these ideas. HELP seems to have a number of templates and profiles. Could you be more specific on the cause of and the fix for the probem?.

After successfully dissolving a line shapefile into a one feature shapefile, the dissolve geoprocessing function consistently malfunctions on successive tries for any shapefile. I'm running on Windows 7 Professional on an HP Pavilion Dv6 Notebook with 64-bit i3 CPU and 4 GB RAM. I'd bet anything that it's an ESRI problem though.

Disappointed that I haven't heard back from any of the contributors, I poked around until I found a GIS that would give me a more varied view of concave, planar, and convex planforms from an elevation file. I found Landserf and created a planform of one of their DEM tutorial examples - first in the .bil format and then in the .raw format . Both created a rich and believable mixture of real (not integer) planform curvature figures. They both could be added to an ESRI map, but both were rounded to positive integer values (why?). In one case, the Landserf values were -10 to 10. In the other -256 to 256 (why?). They became ESRI values of 0 to 10 and 0 to 256 respectively (why?). Is planform really that mysterious? Stan

Planform curvatures of forest harvest areas are said to partially predict debris slide hazards in forest soils. See attached. Figures from use of the ESRI toolbox curvature feature show almost the entire forest to have convex planform curves. This does not seem credible to me given the contours, elevations and rugged mountainous areas in the state forest. See attached. Does anyone know enough about planform curvatures to "validate" my results? Where is a decent explanation and diagrams on the subject? Thanks, Stan Hopkins

Curvature values are artificially multiplied by 100, Stan: http://webhelp.esri.com/arcgisdesktop/9.3/index.cfm?TopicName=How%20Curvature%20works . Yes, but not a billion!

I am having trouble producing a planform curvature output. I'm unsure what units to use and the spatial analysis documentation seems sketchy. The values should be >-0.1 (convex), -0.1 to -0.4 (planar), and >-o.4 (concave). My values are much larger as shown in an attachment. The intent is to employ the technique used in "Modeling Steep Terrain Harvesting Risks Using GIS" also attached. Any guesses? Stan Hopkins

I'm trying to calculate slopes in a state forest starting with 1/3 NED files from the Seamless site. I can see the NED files and they check out. My use of ArcGIS slope features using spatial analysis from the spatial analysis toolbar and tool box slope features result in non-descript errors. So does 3D slope from the toolbox. My use of the raster calculator from the spatial analysis toolbar has returned close to the the same value in any direction - every 30m steps I take results in a 90 deg drop! Some slopes!! I believe I need to transform the range of slopes returned by using the z-factor in some way. Can you help? Stan
