Hi Michael- Everything is on drives in my desktop computer, not networked. Software running on C-drive, data on another internal hard drive. Eric

Thanks to you both, @MichaelVolz and @JoshuaBixby, for your replies. Michael: It's a file gdb on a drive in the desktop on which I'm working. I'm a little bit embarrassed, but mostly mystified, as I have now succeeded with the operation, though I'm clueless as to why: Prompted by Joshua's question, I tried summarizing on other fields in the same table, with success. So just to be double-triple sure, before posting on that outcome here, I tried the original operation one more time, and it succeeded. But I have no idea why, as I took the exact same steps with the exact same data that in at least ten previous attempts over multiple sessions (exiting ArcMap and restarting it), yesterday and today, yielded the same error. I can only guess that there was or is some intermittent underlying glitch that my French degree did not prepare me to hunt down. Baffled but content, Eric

Hello all- I'm getting an error when I try to summarize a geodatabase table on an attribute -- see image below. This is a routine operation that I regularly perform on the same type of table in the same environment. I get no error when I perform the same operation on other tables from the same source and of matching schema. Attempts to resolve: I have thoroughly searched this site and other ESRI sites, as well as the web in general, and get zero hits. (searching under: <"summarize failed" "an error occurred when attempting to complete the operation">) There is no error information produced in Geoprocessing > Results. I have tried exporting the table to a standalone dbf, then performing the summary on that, with the same error. I see no anomalies when I visually inspect the contents of the attribute fields. Anyone have any troubleshooting ideas? Thanks in advance for any help. Eric ArcMap 10.8.1.14362 on current Windows 10

Mike, or anyone, are you still out there? Your solution worked perfectly for me in a field calculation a couple days ago. Now, using the same fields in the same database, but a different selection of records, I'm getting an error. I'm too much of a dolt in Python to see why. Here's what I'm getting: "syntaxerror: encoding declaration in unicode string (<expression>, line 0)" (see below) At first I thought it might be some characters that were causing the issue (hyphens, slashes, spaces), but eliminating them didn't help. Any ideas? Eric

Thank you, Shahar! Your observation that the "Add OLE DB Connection" function is now hidden in a button instead of being part of the add DB connection dialog helped me solve a nagging mystery! --Eric

Salut Guillaume- Did you ever find an answer to your question? I'm looking for the same thing. I doubt we'll get help from ESRI, as their resources are devoted to putting out crappy new software versions instead of fixing and documenting issues in the old ones... --Eric

Hi Max- Thanks for the code, but I'm afraid I'm a bit unschooled in how to use it. I'm guessing that if I knew .NET and VBA better, I could use your code to achieve what I used to with an ArcScript posted by a benevolent user years ago. His script made it easy for even lower primates such as me to add a button to an ArcMap toolbar that creates or updates a time/date/filepath stamp in the layout: http://arcscripts.esri.com/details.asp?dbid=12887 The post has a link to download a txt with the code and instructions if you're curious. Thanks again for any pointers you can give me. Eric

Yes. A very nice feature indeed. Right under the Insert Menu -> Insert Dynamic Text Read posts about version 10 before migrating... I jumped the gun now i wish I waited. VBA for example is being phased out which is most evident by the fact that in version 10 you can no longer add UI Controls (buttons, tools, etc) in the Normal Template only on document level. Somewhat useful for a one-off, but nothing compared to the utility of having a time/date/path signature box of the size and location you determine and that you can update at the click of a button. This button control was a big help before we "upgraded" to Arc 10: http://arcscripts.esri.com/details.asp?dbid=12887 --Eric

Hello David and Neville- Can I assume that ArcReader 10 will as a rule read a pmf created in 9.3? (Haven't found any guidance on this in ESRI help files or elsewhere in forums). Thanks in advance. Eric
