Hello, This issue is resolved in 3.1.3 patch. The Distance Accumulation and Distance Allocation tools produce artifacts in the result if the Horizontal or Vertical factor parameters are specified. https://support.esri.com/en-us/bug/the-distance-accumulation-and-distance-allocation-tools-bug-000160031 Patch: https://support.esri.com/en-us/patches-updates/2023/arcgis-pro-3-1-patch-3-3-1-3-announcement Sorry for the inconvenience. Hello, There was an issue, that parallel processing would fail intermittently when using certain Operating Systems (Win11 and WinServer2022). We think this issue is resolved in ArcGIS Pro 2.9.5 and ArcGIS Pro 3.0. If a geoprocessing tool runs sometimes, and fail to run other times, with the same data and the same parameters, then it usual has to do with the specifics of the environment the tool is being run. We want to figure out why these issues are happening so if you are able to share your data, please reach out to me egraham@esri.com. If you are already using ArcGIS Pro 2.9.5 or ArcGIS Pro 3.0, then as mentioned above, the temp location should be examined. https://pro.arcgis.com/en/pro-app/latest/tool-reference/spatial-analyst/parallel-processing-with-spatial-analyst.htm Temp location: Some tools use a use a Windows system environment variable to control where the temporary data goes while the parallel processing is happening. Once you open the System Properties, click the Advanced tab, then Environment Variables. Click New to open the New System Variable dialog box. Enter TempFolders for the Variable Name. For the Variable value, specify the path to a local folder where the temporary data will be written to. Click OK when you are done. You may need to restart your machine for the change to take effect. (I created a folder on my E drive, as my E drive is much larger than my C drive) Maximizing performance with SSD: You can improve performance by utilizing solid-state drives (SSD) in your computer. Maximum performance is usually gained by having the input data, the output being generated, and the temporary data on an SSD, compared with having them on physical hard disk drives (HDD). However, because these devices are relatively expensive, and generally do not have as large a capacity, you can still gain a significant portion of the performance advantage by keeping the input data on the HDD and using an SSD for the TempFolders only. I hope some of these tips help resolve the issues mentioned above. You can help us figure out what is causing these issues by letting us know what version of AcrGIS you are using, where your temp folder is and what OS you have installed. Thanks, Liz Graham egraham@esri.com

@smitty1e, your connection, https://smitty-gmu.maps.arcgis.com/home/index.html, is not to a Portal Enterprise, it is to ArcGIS Online. For your script to run you need to be connected to an ArcGIS Enterprise portal that has an ArcGIS Image Server configured for Raster Analysis.

Hi @smitty1e, The raster analysis tools, such as Calculate Distance, are portal tool and are only available to you when you are signed into an ArcGIS Enterprise portal that has an ArcGIS Image Server configured for Raster Analysis. When the tool is invoked, ArcGIS Pro serves as a client and the processing occurs in the servers federated with ArcGIS Enterprise. The portal tool accepts layers from your portal as input and creates output in your portal. The input raster layer supports a layer from the portal, a URI or URL to an image service, or the output from the Make Image Server Layer tool. The input feature layer can be a layer from the portal or a URI or URL to a feature service. This tool does not support local raster data or layers. While you can use local feature data and layers as input to this portal tool, best practice is to use layers from your portal as input. From your scripting error I think you may not be meeting one of the criteria I mention above. Also, I'm not sure why you are running Euclidean Distance in the Pro Application first? If you are trying to get a code snippit you can run Calculate Distance from inside the Pro Application. In Pro if you log into your Portal and have the correct setup and licenses to use Raster Analysis, you are able to access Calculate Distance from in the Pro Application. You can access this tool in 2 places: 1) In the Geoprocessing pane, in the search bar type the name of the tool. (Or in the Geoprocessing pane next to Toolboxes, it says Portal. Click Portal and you can see Raster Analysis Tools toolset, and in there is the Use Proximity (Legacy) toolset. 2) On the Analysis Ribbon --> Raster Analytics After you run Calculate Distance in Pro you can go to the history, right click the successfully run tool and select Copy Python Command, then use this command in your script- if your script is setup to access Portal. Also, I suggest that you use Distance Accumulation, instead of Calculate Distance. Calculate Distance is part of a Legacy toolset. I hope you find this information helpful, Liz Graham Spatial Analyst Product Engineer

Hi Andy, I am a product engineer on the Spatial Analyst team who works primarily with the Distance tools. Thank you for bringing this concern to my attention. Can share your data with me? If so, please email me so I can setup a file share: egraham@esri.com. I will investigate the behavior you are reporting. In the meantime, here are a couple suggestions to help you get the result you are expecting. These suggestion require that you modify your Cost Raster. Suggestion 1 Reduce the Cost Raster cell size by a factor of 3 using Natural Neighbors resampling. Then use the resampled raster as the Cost raster in Distance Accumulation. If the result still doesn’t include all of your Cost Raster areas in the result, then run Focal Statistics on the resampled dataset to thicken it, then use the result of Focal Statistics in Distance Accumulation as the Cost Raster. (Focal Statistics will essentially do a 1 cell raster buffer.) Suggestion 2 If you don’t want to change the cell size, you can replace the nodata in the cost raster with a very high cost value. (This prevents the nodata from being thickened.) Run Is Null with Cost dataset as input Run Con Conditional raster: result from Is Null True Raster or value: very very large cost False raster: Friction dataset Run Distance Accumulation using the Cost Raster with very high Cost values that was just created using Con. I will continue to look into the issue you reported, but in the meantime I hope one of these suggestions helps you. Thanks, Liz

Hi, I'm glad we are getting closer. It looks like the tool only processed to the extent of your input source, I'm not sure if you set the extent or not? Here is what I think will work. For the inputs to Euclidean Distance set the source and the output The environment settings Extent: DEM (or at least to an extent that covers where you want the result to cover) Cellsize: DEM (unless you want a different cellsize) Snap Raster DEM (so the resulting pixel will line up with the DEM, this often helps if there are more steps to your analysis which uses both the DEM and the result form the distance tool) Mask: DEM* *Before you run the tool again you need to make sure that the values in the DEM raster that fall on the ocean are NODATA. (I am adding an image with green scribbles where there needs to be nodata.) How Mask works is that it only processes the area within the mask, meaning it only processes where the mask has values greater than or equal to zero. If you are unsure you can run the Is Null tool with the DEM as input. It will return 0 everywhere that the DEM has values equal to or greater than 0 and will return 1 where there is nodata in the DEM. If it turns out that your DEM has the value of zero over the water then use the In Null result in Con tool to create a new Mask. I am including a screen shot of the Con tool if you need to do this step. Please let me know if you have more questions. Liz

Hi, You say you are getting back the same DEM. But, I think the result you are getting back is all NoData. And I think the reason for this is because you are specifying a barrier over your whole study area. The Distance calculation will not process areas that are a barriers. Barriers should be nodata in the result. If you want your calculation to process from the line to the coast then the line is your source and the coast is the barrier (not the whole study area). Instead of using the DEM as a barrier please try using the dem as a mask, in the environment settings. But in order for this to work the pixel values in the DEM surrounding the island need to be nodata not zero. Liz

Hi Fabio, Please update your expression to only have 2 open parentheses and let me know if you were then able to execute your expression successfully within the Raster Calculator. SquareRoot(Square(0.004167)) Also, please make sure you have both your extent and cellsize set. Thanks, Liz
