In case anybody comes across this thread in the future there is a company that has created a tool for creating mapbook indexes. Here's a link to the company site: http://www.mainstreetgis.com/. The tool is called MainStreetIndexer and a license costs $50

Jeffrey, Thank you very much for responding to my post. I checked out the link you posted. The script downloaded from this site creates index pages that don't combine like roads. For example the index pages from the mapbook in the link look like this: RoadA: 3 RoadA: 4 RoadA: 7 RoadB: 23 RoadB: 24 I'm able to get to this point, but I'm looking to combine like roads into one record with each index page listed as a single attribute. For example I'm trying to convert the above output into the following: RoadA: 3,4,7 RoadB: 23,24 If anybody can give me some tips on how to do this I would be very appreciative.

I??m trying to automate the process of creating a mapbook index. I have two layers: streets layer and page index layer. Streets may span across more than one page within the index layer. I??m trying to export a text file with one column containing street names and a second column containing each index page that the corresponding street exists within. Example: StreetA ??12,13? StreetB ??3,7,9? StreetC ??20,21,22,23? If anybody has any tips for how to create some type of script or process to accomplish this task I would be greatly appreciative

Thank you very much for responding to my question. I found a decent solution for my problem. I have to convert my civil 3D files to CAD and then import each feature layer. I figure either way I'm going to have to convert from Civil 3D and this is probably the simplest way to go about it. Thanks again

I'm having trouble attempting to transfer data from a .dwg file created in Civil 3D into a geodatabase. I've tried the conventional methods of using the CAD to Geodatabase Tool, and simply exporting the data as a feature class. The CAD to Geodatabase Tool yields no result, and exporting the data causes ArcMap to crash. Does anybody know of some type of Data Interoperability Extension that will help in this conversion?

In case anybody else comes across this problem here is the answer I received from 'ask a cartographer': Mapping Center Answer: It is a little confusing that the file extensions are the same for a CAD line style and for what used to be the case in Workstation ArcInfo, this being the .LIN extension. However, the two are are not the same, nor is the type of file that works with the Style Manager in the current desktop ArtcGIS. You can either create brand new line styles within ArcGIS, or you can use the ESRI-CAD.style included in the software as a starting point. If you want to start with the Esri-CAD then customize the line symbols, you will need to create a new style and then copy all the ones you want to use from ESRI-CAD.style symbols into your new style. Then you will be able to edit them (this is new in 10 becasue you are no longer able to directly edit the styles we ship with the softare -- it's a good protection mechanism!)

Does anybody have a reference on how to import line styles from AutoCAD into ArcGIS? The line styles I am working with have been converted into a LIN file. ArcGIS is not recognizing this file. I was hoping somebody would know how to convert this file into a format that the Style Manager can recognize. Any help would be greatly appreciated
