Dear Fiona, dear all, We have finally solved the problem based on the fact that using the unc path directly, we never encountered the problem. The IT team had build the network drive using "gpo" and this was causing the bug. With Esri support and IT Team we solved the problem by "building" the network drive with "net use" instead of "gpo".

And this has nothing to do with the migration from 10 to 10.4.1. We encounter the problem with gdb created in 10.4.1 and mxd in 10.4.1.

Dear Westerville, Same as you, the problem happens with gdb/shapefile not saved locally. I've just identified exactly the origin of the problem in our case last friday, it happens with data loaded from a network share. If I load data into my mxd from a gdb in a network share ("Y:/geodatabse.gdb"), after a few hours I've got the "general function failure" error. If I load the same data from the server directly ("myserver/mydata/geodatabse.gdb"), no error. Westerville what is your platform configuration ? Are you using a network share too ? We are using arcgis desktop 10.4.1 on windows server 2012 r2/Citrix xen app 7.6. Carine

Hello Jeff, I am encountering the same problem : random "General Function Failure" error's while using ArcMap Standard. I upgraded from arcmap 10.0 to 10.4.1. Users have opened there last mxd containing simple gdb (10.0). They saved it in 10.4.1 and still encounter the problem. Thanks for the suggestions too, Carine
