I published a GP service to ArcGIS server. I found that the operation speed is extermely slow because of the function ListDataFrames. To define a dataframe object with respect to my mxd, it spended 3 mins. Actually, I do not need to change the dataframe in my operation. Therefore, it wastes the time on defining the dataframe object when the GP service is called each time. Is any method to define the dataframe object and keep it alive in my GP service so that dataframe will not be defined each time when the GP service is called? (i.e. dataframe is defined when GP service is set up and destoryed when GP service is stopped). I am not sure whether arcpy contains function for defining some globel objects for GP service operation or not. If no, SOE (server object extensions) can do so?

I would like to use arcpy to add a specific layer in mxd and automatically label the feature with different colors according to its attributes. Even if I use the simple syntax lblClass.expression = "Function FindLabel ( [OBJECTID] ) FindLabel = [OBJECTID] End Function", label also cannot be shown. I search some papers about this and found that it may caused by "Advanced" setting on label expression. However, my layer is dynamically added in mxd but not pre-loaded in mxd. Does anyone know, 1) Can I label the feature with different colors according to its attributes if i don't turn on "Advanced" setting on label expression (dont use If-then)? 2) How can I turn on the "Advanced" label expression by using arcpy? As I know, there is no property of labelClass to turn on the "Advanced" mode. Any other alternative methods to do so? I tried to use arcpy.mapping.UpdateLayer but "Advanced" label expression can not be updated by other layers which have set the "Advanced" option. Thanks.

Thanks Dan. I found that the selection result will be what I expected if I extracted few Grid polygons to another new GDB for selection. I think the problem is caused by my master layer.

I used the function "SelectLayerByLocation_management" with parameter "SHARE_A_LINE_SEGMENT_WITH" to select Grid polygon by using the line (refer to the attached picture for details). However, just only polygon A is selected but not both polygon A and B are selected. Polygon A and Polygon B have a common edge. Does anyone know the reason? If I want to select polygon A and polygon B by using the red line (common edge), what syntax I should use? Thanks.

Hi Greg, Thank you for your advice. However, copying feature to shp file will get longer processing time. The function "Clip to Shape" can mask out the unwanted area efficiently. Do you have any ideas about "Clip to Shape" in arcpy? Thanks Calvin

Hi, Does anyone know whether the arcpy includes the function like "Clip to Shape" shown in ArcMap (DataFrame right click > Data Frame Properties> Data Frame > Clip Option > Clip to Shape)? I just can know that the arcpyproduction includes the similar function "ClipDataFrametoGeometry". However, it is required Production Mapping Licence. It is strange that "Clip to Shape" is a built-in function of Arcmap but it does not include in arcpy. Thanks Calvin

Tried it before but failure also. I would like to know whether you install 10.3 ArcObject sdk in windows server 2012 or not? And which version of ArcObject sdk did you use for building the dll? Thanks.

Hi I would like to use a managed dll for ArcMap and background geoprocessing (64-bit). I registered the dll by using the methods described in 43712 - ESRIRegAsm.exe Error: Registration Failed. Could not load file or assembly and 40735 - Register function tools (DLL) for both Desktop and 64-bit Background Processing. However, i got the problem in step 5 (ESRIRegAsm.exe C:\xxx\xxxx.dll /regfile:xx.reg). I found that ESRIRegAsm.exe cannot generate any register file (xx.reg) in 10.3 under win7(64-bit) but successfully generate in 10.2 under win server 2008(64-bit). I used the parameter ESRIRegAsm /e to get the error message but it just showed "Generation of reg file failed (/regfile option)." Did I get anything wrong for dll registration for 10.3 under win 7 (64-bit)? or It is a bug for 10.3? Thanks Calvin
