Thanks for the reply. We have full database backups run nightly and I would run new ones before the restore and switch. I was also aware of the need for the relative user accounts be moved to the new server, but there are not very many...I think there are perhaps 4 admin accounts that need to get created on new server. The Power user accounts are easy to put back in once it is put on our domain. I thought that the backup/restore might bring those over due to their association with the database? These Servers are all in a VMware virtual server environment. If I am not mistaken, a new server can remain off of our domain until it is in a state with the appropriate geodatabase and content admin user accounts and the databases restored. Should there be a need to supply a new SDE connection if they are identical (the point of all this), the new server would be set up with a FQDN after the old server has been renamed and removed from the domain (it would still be available in case something does go wrong to switch back and reconnect it back to the domain. As far as anything else going wrong, we will have Snapshots and DB backups to roll back to. The way I see it (and I know there are a few things that have to be done in the correct sequence...we have a VMware expert on our IT team) nothing changes with the connection string, therefore, nothing changes once the new server is in place exactly mimicking the old SQL Server and nothing has to be remapped or re-published. Let me know if I am missing something... I know this is a bit trickier on a SQL Server machine than, say... an ArcGIS Server, but we did successfully replace a ArcGIS Server (site owner) server in Enterprise with a very similar methodology.

Thanks for the feedback and confirmation that this is a viable option for having to move database servers and, by far, the quickest, least painful method.

In the case of a relational database server failure, ESRI recommends that we restore geodatabases from backups on new server, make all new connection strings to new database Instance (machine name), fix every database connection error in every map and/or ArcGIS Pro project that is connected to an Enterprise database (SQLServer/Oracle, etc.), republish every service on your Enterprise ArcGIS Servers and potentially check/fix all maps and their popups. This process, to me, sounds like potentially a ton of work to get your Enterprise back up and running again. I proposed that there is, potentially, another solution that cuts the work down to a few hours at best. Our servers are virtual on VMware. This approach still would work with stand alone physical machines used as database servers as well. I propose that it is possible to create a server with the same machine name for your Enterprise database server (and for this document, we'll just use SQL Server as an example), leave it off your Domain. Add OS and any typical software and install SQL Server, taking the machine name as the Instance (in effect having the new server with the same name and Instance as your existing server), Then the magic...Take old server off the Domain and add the newly created one to your Domain and restore all geodatabases from their backups Verify user accounts are still there or authorize the same user accounts set up on old server, and in theory, everything is back up and running at that point. All of your old connections should now still work, including Services and Maps. I could not get confirmation form Tech support that this approach works as they have apparently never had anyone with a failing DB Server to confirm this method, so I thought I would ask the Community if this seems to be a way around this type of disaster recovery without all of the work. Please let me know if anyone else has had a failing DB Server and tried another method. Thank you, Brett.

SQL Server DB server disaster recovery process documented at ESRI to change all of your data connections in all of your maps and then republish all of your services. I could not get a full answer from the ESRI Case worker as they can not test my approach, nor has ESRI ever come across an alternative to build another VMware server and SQL server instance with the same machine name and instance as the current DBserver, take the original server off of the Domain, connect the new server to the domain, install SQL Server and restore the DB backups. This should make all of your database connections, services, Portal content (maps and apps) stay the same and nothing else to do...This approach would save potentially a few weeks based on your Enterprise usage. Has anyone else had to recover or migrate to another SQL Server machine without the long and painful method?

I can do this in desktop, but not in the web environment or Collector. Am I missing something? Using Enterprise/desktop 10.7.1. and Pro 2.5.1.

Of Course "Smart editor" doesn't even deal with related records at all and I can't find a way to move/switch/reattach one related record or feature from one parent to another!

I am at 10.7.1 and editing is still a mess. It is a royal pain if you have ever tried to use it. I am trying to get an app up and running that allows edits of sign poles and the related signs (table in 1:n relationship class). Absolutely frustrating. From the editing widget, you can't get to the related features. If I have a pole open in the editor popup, I scroll down to the related signs and click on the link, a popup comes up that hangs and never lists the street signs: If I start with the popup, I can click on the arrow to the right of the related signs, I can get a list of the related records that I can edit one at a time if I know which is which by default (there is a list of related records, but you can't pre-configure what that list looks like...just has 3 lines that say Street Signs. You can change the attribute shown after the list comes up to an attribute that distinguishes it from the others, such as the UniqueID. If you click on the arrow to the right, ithe editor for that record pops up. After that, you can't get back into it unless you get out of the editor and start again with the pop-up. No moving to another related record. It is basically a hot mess. I thought the smart editor widget was going to be the ticket going forward, but nothing has changed and again, no easy way to use it for related records/Features unless you start with the pop-up, find the right related record and use the smart editor to edit that record only. Also have not found any way to relate another existing record to the feature or to add a new related record. Rinse repeat..........

I use Xray all the time! I use it to do the needs analysis for schema changes... It is incredibly important. It would be awesome if the Xray for pro solution would also incorporate the functionality of ArcGIS Diagrammer from ArcGIS 10.2.. I agree with all of the above. There are and were some extremely handy tools that you can't get anywhere else! consider Reorder Fields script tool and I also agree that I really miss Diagrammer. I was able to get it running using some updated dll files that I found, but nothing in pro to do all that X-Ray does is extremely sad!

Also be able to show the coded values and/or the Description in the popup and feature template. For example, I have a list of hundreds if not thousands of road signs in a subtype (regulatory, warning, etc.) environment, but the people that will be adding and modifying these in the field use the MUTCD CODE (Code in the Domain), not the Description. Can we please add functionality to show the codes and descriptions in the templates and pop-ups, not just the descriptions. I do notice that if I hover over a sign, it shows the code, but only one, where there can be a pole and up to 6 signs on a pole

Thanks for the add-in. I do have a couple of enhancements/issues. I am running in ArcPro 2.0. After installing the addin, you click on one of the ribbon apps and you can't release it back to the original ID/Select settings. Also, you can't remove the addin unless you remove the fil;e placed in the user folder structure. Lastly, StreetView opens in full screen mode which will cover what you are working on. It might be more useful if it is a smaller window that pops on top of the ArcPro window. Other than these issues, I'm glad someone is providing something for Street View for Pro!

In Line 6, is the GUID in your script a constant to all geodatabases? and does this actually reset the owner or just the name or some kind of alias? background is...I imported a dataset from another database with the GDB owner of DBO via XML and the target geodatabase does not have dbo as a user, the data owner is SDEADMIN, GDB owner is SDE.

Actually, I still have not received an answer to this issue for web-based maps…outside of ArcMap with Attribute Assistant rules. I don’t think that PRO has an answer for it yet until they introduce the rules functionality. See my responses to your individual questions below. Hopefully, this helps some. Thank you, Cary (Brett) Sanders
