This helps explain the credits: http://www.esri.com/software/arcgis/arcgisonline/credits So if you hypothetically started with 1,000 credits and you only geocode to use credits, you could geocode 25,000 records.

This is correct. I spoke with Esri support today and learned that batch geocoding using ArcGIS Online geocoding services will now require the purchase of credits. I also learned that the thousand or so credits that my account started with are enough to geocode around 40 records. Eminently useful. On that note, I'm searching for alternatives, so if anyone knows of good geocoding services available from other sources for free, I'd love to know. I always understood the credits as working the other way around. Thousands of geocode requests to 1 credit. Can anyone verify? Also, there are plenty of free geocoding service but the issue is what kind of accuracy you need. ESRI provides matches and accuracy information in one record. That way you can weed out the poor matches. Free services will generally not do that or will limit the amount of records you can run per day.

Thanks. I was able to follow those instructions in ArcMap 10. Is it your understanding that the World Service always requires a sunscription and credentials?

I believe the file in question is available here: http://support.esri.com/cn/knowledgebase/techarticles/detail/40542. A discussion of the changes is also posted at: http://blogs.esri.com/esri/supportcenter/2013/01/04/changes-to-default-geocoding-locator-options-at-arcgis-for-desktop-10-1-sp1/. Thanks for taking the time to post. Unfortunately the first link is for an XML file that removes ALL online locators. The second link leads to an article that eventually takes me to this page http://support.esri.com/en/knowledgebase/techarticles/detail/40802 but I cannot follow those instructions because I have Arcmap 10.0.

Would it be possible to attach that XML file? I could also just edit the XML file to include the block of XML that has changed.

The way I see it, if you can create a feature class out of the data then you should be able to Geocode it. Do you get the error right away or after it has processed many of the records? I've given up on fixing this and just re-process my data over again minus the results. Its slow but it works. On a completely unrelated note, I reject all results that do not match rooftop on at least a 90% confidence level.

This is not a data issue. I have a new process when Geocoding now where I run my batch until it fails and then do a vlookup of the results in excel and re-run the records that did not return results. I never take records out. I just keep running the same file over and over again minus whatever records returned results already. Eventually it will finish all the records.

1) I cannot post the data as there are several federal and state laws that prevent me from doing so 2) I work at a Fortune 500 corporation that is looking at licensing other ESRI products. This problem exists from 2003 and I can link to the threads to prove it. It is a problem with the application and its error handling and its been going on for a decade. This error message is useless and should never be displayed... period. Release a patch and fix the problem.

Update 2: The problem is back I attempted a list of 8,000 records or so and it got through about 2,200 and displayed the same error. Of course never telling me which records was the problem or what the problem even was.

Just to throw this out there, I have tried geocoding from xlsx files, csv files, and mdb files. All give the same error. All start the process and fail later. The program needs to be able to deal with data from any source that allows you to click on it and it needs to be able to ignore errors and continue geocoding. All errors should be noted in another output. This is 2013 and this problem existed all the way back in 2003. This should not be happening still.
