I am using Arc 10.2.2. I am frequently getting a "no editable layers" for a shapefile layer I created. Half the time I get the error message, half the time everything is fine. I am making a series of maps, and with every new map (I save the same map under a new name to create a .mxd file) I add to this layer. I use the create features to add a rectangle to this shapefile and update a row in the attribute table (in a field I created). I stored the layer with accompanying .dbf, .prj, .sbn, et cetera and I can "edit data source" and re-add the shapefile, but this does nothing. These files are also in the default gdb. Sometimes I will open the map document and it will work, other times I have to remove and re-add the layer. Why is this happening?
