3-4 minutes per page?!?! Wow, I wish! I have a transit analysis mapbook that takes 45+ minutes per (11x17) page (~ 30 total pages) and its a nightmare. This doesn't even include aerial imagery, just background roadways, railroads, and several activity center locations/labels.

I'm having an issue where a feature class I'm trying to edit does not show under the "Create Features" task pane. When I begin editing, I choose the File Geodatabase that contains the feature class I wish to edit, and it shows on the list above. I hit "OK" and the "Create Features" pane shows on the right side of my display. Rather than Editor Toolbar > Start Editing (the ArcMap 9.3.1 method), go to the Table of Contents, right-click on the shapefile or feature class that you want to edit, and select Edit Features > Start Editing. This is the more-direct method and it should automatically load the Feature Template that you selected.

Rather than deleting, would it be easier to just cover these areas? Or are you interested in removing the excess data and saving refresh time? Under Data Frame Properties > Data Frame > Extent Used by Full Extent Command > Other: > Specify Extent > Outline of Features > Layer: [select mask shapefile]. This essentially tells ArcMap "Don't show me anything beyond the limits of this shapefile", however it does not modify any of your original datasets. Much like a Definition Query.

I've experienced the same issue with intersection collision data. Converting dozens of pie charts to graphics and manually moving them away from the intersection is far too time-consuming, and the graphics overlap and eliminate road labels in the process. Is there a more effective method of adding an offset automatically without converting to graphics? I've tried every level of properties, symbology, labeling, etc. and ended up 10+ levels deep in properties and settings without any luck!

Start Editing > Select All > Merge. This will 'collapse' multiple features into one, regardless of whether they intersect, overlap, etc. Try it with a copy of your data first to ensure that its doing what you want. There is also Union, which will create a new feature that represents all selected features collapsed into one.

Yes, the trace option is much worse in ArcMap10 than in 9.3.1, i.e. it used to work!

I agree, the best approximation would come from a DOT or local government street centerline file that includes number of lanes. If the area is not too large then you could rough-digitize over an aerial image, such as ESRI's basemaps: http://www.arcgis.com/home/item.html?id=10df2279f9684e4a9f6a7f08febac2a9 or http://www.arcgis.com/home/item.html?id=677cd0c509d842a98360c46186a2768e Street polygon files just don't exist outside of specific project locations where they were digitized for a single purpose or product.

I've used a simple hiking-grade GPS device to collect Lat/Long points at wayfinding sign locations. The resulting table was converted to an XLS spreadsheet, and populated with some field notes such as size, type, condition, etc. The table can then be automatically digitized in ArcMap using Right-Click > Display X,Y Data. As long as the coordinate system is set to a Lat/Long Geographic (non-projected) variety, such as "GCS_North_American_1983" the points will be correctly placed, and save you weeks of digitization. Just pay some interns with an iPhone to collect the points.

No two street centerline datasets are alike! Even datasets that include common roads are never digitized to the same level of precision. How do I automate the selection of roads from one dataset that ARE NOT INCLUDED in the other dataset given the following characteristics: Centerline datasets are created by difference agencies (public and private) There are NO common attributes Alignment does not match for common roads Through trial and error I've discovered that a spatial join will take all day long and not produce a correct final product, even for a small subset of the data. I've also tried select by location, roads that intersect, which produced far too many roads. The intent was then to choose switch-selection to those that did not intersect. As well as select by location, roads that are identical, which produced far too few roads.

If you're interested in displaying directionality of traffic flow (AM flow towards the employment center; PM flow away from the employment center) then you should be using TransCAD modeling software. Your local MPO or regional RPO will have a transportation modeler who is more familiar with TransCAD. If total flow is what you're interested in, then ArcMap is just fine. You will need to create a sumFlow field in the attribute table, and use Properties > Symbology > Quantities > Proportional Symbols.
