10.6 ArcGIS Server service fails to start if it is upgraded from 10.4.x

Blog Post created by SAyare-esristaff Employee on Jan 10, 2018

As a best practice, it is documented that the GeoEvent Server service should be stopped and set the startup type to manual mode before starting the upgrade process.

However, if 10.4.x GeoEvent Server service is not stopped before the upgrading to 10.6, then ArcGIS server service may fail to start after 10.6 is installed. User may not come across this issue on a Linux OS.

You will see the following error:

Error 1067: The process terminated unexpectedly.

 AGS service not starting

The workaround steps to successfully start the ArcGIS Server service after the upgrade to 10.6 are as follows:

1. Delete the .site folder from the following directories:

<ArcGIS Server installation drive>\arcgisserver\config-store\

<ArcGIS Server installation drive>\arcgisserver\directories\arcgissystem\arcgisjobregistry\

<ArcGIS Server installation drive>\arcgisserver\directories\arcgissystem\arcgisindex\

<ArcGIS Server installation drive>\arcgisserver\directories\arcgissystem\kml\

<ArcGIS Server installation drive>\arcgisserver\directories\arcgissystem\arcgisinput\

<ArcGIS Server installation drive>\arcgisserver\directories\arcgissystem\arcgisuploads\

<ArcGIS Server installation drive>\arcgisserver\directories\arcgissystem\

<ArcGIS Server installation drive>\arcgisserver\directories\arcgiscache\

<ArcGIS Server installation drive>\arcgisserver\directories\arcgisjobs\

<ArcGIS Server installation drive>\arcgisserver\directories\arcgisoutput\

2.  Backup and then delete config-store-connection.xml and machine-config.xml files from the following directory.

      <ArcGIS Server installation drive>\Program Files\ArcGIS\Server\framework\etc

3. Navigate to windows services and start ArcGIS Server service.

4. Now access http://localhost:6080/arcgis/manager from the browser and then Click Create New Site.   Provide the same ArcGIS Server admin credentials what you had earlier.

For successful upgrade, the location for config-store and directories should be same as that of ArcGIS Server 10.4.x

In case of a multi-node site, the shared location for config-store and directories needs to be provided accordingly.

5. After the site creation is completed, you will find that existing ArcGIS Server services at 10.4.x got upgraded to 10.6.

You will also need to update any machine related settings like Web server max heap size and app server heap size. Please note that this needs to be done on all machines in your site
