This is an enterprise. Our GIS Admins are not and should not be the same as our SQL Admins.

Hello, It is important to note that we need to use windows authentication to manage security for our sql servers. I created the enterprise geodatabase and thus it mapped me to the database user dbo. However, I have a GIS Admin group that i need to be mapped as dbo rather than me. I have made them db_owners however this does not function as it should when creating, editing, and versioning data from inside ArcMap. Has something to do with users names must be the same as the scheme for certain things. I have tried everything i can think of but the system will not let me alter the user dbo nor delete my user and resign because of dependencies. Without starting over, is their a way I can change the mapping to the group server login.

Hello, I have a Tiff that is georefferenced using a .tfw. My understanding is that it was georefferenced in NAD 27. I have defined the projection to NAD 27 using the define projection tool yet the tiff draws way out in space somewhere. My first guess is that maybe NAD 27 is the wrong coordinate system but the user is confident it is. Has anyone had this problem? What am I missing? Is there a way to reverse engineer what the coordinate system should be? The TFW looks like this: 16.842000000000 0.000000000000 0.000000000000 -16.842000000000 1318093.968382756200 890483.155222113940

Hello, I have had a request to redesign our enterprise database so that it can leverage both scheme and windows based security groups. The database is to exist on Microsoft SQL Server. For the sake of the conversation lets say we have two groups that need to access this. Mapping is to be the generic group that is to contain basic mapping data. The second will be called land. The Land group will need to have access to more sensitive data that we do not want the average user to see. Before I explain what I have attempted, let me explain what the target outlook would be. We would like to be able to have 1 database with the data sepperated out by scheme. For example: 1) GeodatabaseName.Mapping.Roads 2) GeodatabaseName.Mapping.States 3) GeodatabaseName.Land.LandOwners To where people in the active directory group mapping can see 1 & 2 and land group can see 3. Any thoughts as to tackle this? At the risk of muddying the water, the next section will explain what I have tried. I have attempted this by adding the relative groups as Server Logins and have mapped them appropriately to specific database users. For example, our active directory has a group "DOMAIN\Mapping". This group is now a server login that is mapped to also be a user of the Geodatabase. Next I have created both a Scheme and a Role both called "Mapping". The Role owns the Scheme and the User is added as a member to the role mapping. Same process was done for the Land Scheme. I can confirm that his has the desired effect from inside of MSSQL Studio by confirming databases created in either scheme are only visible to the appropriate users groups. Heres the issue, if i want the user tot then be able to create a new feature class i get the error "Database User Name and current schema do not match" and appears to be trying to name the new table using the username as a scheme.

I am interested in having a user draw a line on the client side and then passing that to a geoprocessing service to preform further functions. Can you create a Graphics Layer and pass it as a polyline parameter? Further more, can that graphic also be exported as a Shapefile from the browser? I've found some documentation online involving binaries but it was a little above my head. Didn't know if there was a easier way to do so? Or if there was any resources I could check out.

I have been tasked with implementing a number of our mobile assets into our web GIS. For example we have trucks with devices that send coordinate data which we can consume via SOAP services. One thought is to parse the XML into a database and then plot a X,Y Layer from the tables and host via ArcGIS Server. Are there alternative solutions? Is there a best practice for this type of scenario?

We have real time data that is collected in the field that then lives on a SQL database. I have a sde point feature class (I believe its on a separate server) for the corresponding data. My question is, what is the best way to link these together so that the sde FC is always updated with what was recorded in the field without interrupting services i.e. the web map the sde data is hosted on as well as other applications that use the same data. One solution I have thought of would be to have a script that dumps the SQL data into a csv at the desired time increments and then do a simple table join with the feature class. It has been expressed to me that it would be more desirable to reduce the moving parts (and reliability upon a csv) and attempt a SQL to SQL/SDE transaction if at all possible. We are on 10.2 Any thoughts would be appreciated! -L

You'd want to do something closer to this. Utilizing an update cursor and the deleteRow method of the cursor, not the DeleteRows tool.
import arcpy
rig_number = 'RIG_FIELD'
date_field_sort = 'DATEFIELD D'
update_cursor = arcpy.UpdateCursor(rigsFC, '', '', rig_number, date_field_sort)
keep_list = list()
for row in update_cursor:
row_val = row.getValue(rig_number)
if row_val not in keep_list:
keep_list.append(row_val)
elif row_val in keep_list:
update_cursor.deleteRow(row)
else:
pass
This did the trick! Thanks for your help! I am still confused as the difference between a search cursor and an update cursor. Is it that the update cursor is editable and thus methods such as deleteRow can be used with it? Thanks again!

I would use an update cursor, sort by date (newest to oldest) use a list to track all rig_number values, and if the value is already in the list delete that row, if it is not in the list add it and move on. I gave it a shot. Here is what I have.. import arcpy, os, sys FC = r'M:\GIS\DI_AutomationScript\Test\DI13gdb_237c.gdb\di_Rigs' Rows = arcpy.SearchCursor(FC,"","","rig_number;date_processed","date_processed D") RigList=[] for row in Rows: if row.getValue('rig_number') not in RigList: RigList.append(row.getValue('rig_number')) else: arcpy.DeleteRows_management(row) However, an exception was raised... Hello, I receive data once a week from a third party vendor. There are 2 fields in which I wish to use to exclude duplicate. rig_number, and a date field. Currently my script look like this. (standard delete identical code). arcpy.DeleteIdentical_management(rigsFc,rig_number) The thing is that I only care about the most recent one and this process seems to select one at random to keep. Is their a way to use delete identical but keep the attribute with the most current date? Im using python 2.6 and arcMap 10.0 Thanks

Furthermore... when I look at advanced options, everything is grayed out, I suppose this means it cannot find the spatial properties such as shape type, Spatial Reference, Geometry SRID, etc... This puzzles me as i would have assumed that since it is an sde feature class it would have those parameters included.

I have gone through the process and have validated my SQL for my query layer. However it produces a standalone table. This does not work for me as i need a layer. It is my understanding that it produces a table when geometry and geography fields are missing from a table. The table in which im querying from resides on sde and is able to be drawn in arcmap. It has an ObjectID and a Shape(geometry) field. Do I need to configure anything else in order to get it to produce a a query layer and not a table?

Hello, Every week i download data from a site and compile it into one feature class. I would like to be able to create 3 additional feature clsses that can be placed in a web map. I would like the classes to show data for the last 7 days, last 14 days, last month... My question is there any way to tell a feature class to pull data from the master feature class of which I am dumping the downloaded material in and have it query to show last 7 days, 14 days etc... In other words, I want the user to be able to turn on and off layers for the time spans mentioned however I would like the classes to be linked in such a way that all I have to do is import the new data into the main or parent feature class that would then push the data out to the others. Is this possible? Thanks

Hello! Quick Question. I was thinking about implementing Esri for excel into a weekly report I send out to various people. If I wanted to share the report would they need to have an Esri for Office subscription too? Would that mean more Licenses would have to be purchased? Much Appreciated!
