With SQL Server 2016 as a back end cross database joins are an absolute night mare speed is so slow in comparison to arc map 10.6. 20,000 geometry records joined to a view with cross database elements taking nearly 6x as long as arcmap, never mind the fact that i can run the same spatial query in SSMS and get a return in seconds. Yes there are workarounds of creating a table etc, but this is simple database stuff surely ESRI realize that customers need to interact with large custom built databases and want to be able to not have to duplicate data on a constant basis. Speed does improve when using a query layer but it seems to be a lottery on which polygon you will get the attributes from when clicking for a pop up.

Found some time this morning to do some more investigation on this Created a new project saved it locally and exported 3 layers of the data (a point and two polygon layers) into the project default database. I am also using a raster mosaic layer which is saved in a 10.2.2 file geodatabase saved locally so basically ensuring that I am working in a supported environment. All layers are using ITM95 projection. Using one of the polygon layers with a definition query as the clipping layer everything works as expected for both screen and export to hi res pdf. Interestingly I can exclude either the polygon or point layers from the clipping and get expected results but if I exclude the raster layer the clip no longer has an effect when a pdf is exported. Not quite what Branislav Blagojevic is getting but similar in that a raster is involved. Possibly buggy behavior will see if my IT dept can log a Tech support case.

Life is to short for ESRI tech support, my issue seems to be linked to the fact that the map was using old enterprise geo-databases (for some of the layers) which have yet to be upgraded two fixes came to mind duplicate the data out to a current file geodatabase or use donut buffers with a white fill. Went with the second option as I find that having a single source of data is always preferable when you come back to it in a couple of years

When using clip layers to clip to the outline of a feature in ArcGIS Pro 2.4 the layout and map tabs show results as expected screen grab below. But when printing or exporting the map the clipping layer is not honored is there a setting I am missing or is this expected behavior.

For Info just ran a test using a query layer stored on SQL server Express 2014 SP3 and the select layer stored in a file Geo - database and the same issue occurs with the select by location tool.

Thanks George, that is whats probably causing the issue with the select by location. We are waiting on our IT section to migrate us to 2016 and I was just trying to get ahead of the curve with workflows for staff. I will run up a sql server 2014 express editon for the query layer and move the selecting layer to a FGDB to test the select by location functionality.

Thanks Michael, Wire shark does show up some questionable activity in the sql queries, it does seem to be passing through the where clause in my case but is running the in sub select first then nesting my query inside a new select with the results of the sub select as the where clause.

Hi I am trying to replicate a workflow that I had in ArcMAP 10.2.2 using ArcGIS Pro 2.3.3, I have a table with native SQL geometry stored in SQL server 2008 10.0.6241.0. I load this table up as a query layer I then need to select all the polygons from this query layer contained within a geometry stored in a SDE versioned feature class (located on the same SQL server with the geometry also stored in native SQL server format). This works perfectly in arcmap 10.2.2 using the select by location tool. When I try the same process in PRO the resulting selection appears to be random with some polygons 10's of km's outside of the selecting polygon. I can apply a definition query which visually returns the right results using this SQL Syntax ref in (select rtrim(ref)from databasename.databaseuser.querylayertablename a inner join (select shape from databasename.databaseuser.selectingtablemultiversionedview_EVW where id=17) b on a.geom.STIntersects(b.Shape)=1) (this also works in SQL Server Management Studio) unfortunately although the visual representation is correct, the attribute table fails to open as it errors with a Failed to parse the where clause error. Anybody else experience a similar issue or aware of a fix? Ta Larry

Hi all, I'm not a developer but do have to write the odd bit of code to automate output. I have written a script which uses an mxd which has 3 data frames with different basemaps and some textual information which serves as a template to produce a pdf. I have written a script (attached) which loops through the sites of interest zooms to the extent, adjusts the scale to a set scale and then populates the textual information including two tables by doing an intersection with a point and polygon feature class. It all works ok but tends to crash out in or around the 80th site that it hits. I thought at first it was a memory leak, hence all the del()'s but when I checked it out in the resource monitor I found memory consumption was low but the thread count is incrementing by 3 or 4 every time it loops. Anybody any ideas on why this might be happening or a workaround to fix. Thanks in advance Larry

I usually use Apatana studio when writing python purely for the ease of debugging, it never even occurred to me to run the code in the interactive python window I just did and it worked, Thanks again as the next file I hit seems to have the a similar issue and running in inside ArcMap will save me having to rewrite the code to keep track of failures.

I'm back at version 10.2.2 running on a 64bit machine so suspect that there some corruption in the mxd where its trying to access protected memory. The result you got was exactly what I would have expected. I have stepped through the code alright and the crash happens in _base.py in the class _BaseArcObject(object): as such rather than waste any more of your or my time I will bypass that file and close this on the basis that it will work on 10.3 if I hit many more files like this I will just rewrite the code to keep account of files that have caused a crash thanks for your help

Have opened mxd in arcmap and all works as expected script has encountered other corrupt files but the error is being caught in the try except blocks but for some reason the minute it hits this file it terminates in an extremely ungraceful way, I can hardcode it to ignore thi file but would prefer to find a more reliable solution in case there is more than 1 file causing an issue

Hi, I have a fairly simple script which searches a network location looking for mxd's it then checks the data sources and writes a csv of any data sources owned by the DBO schema. It works fine in most instances and has trawled through several large directories without issue but one mxd in particular is causing it to terminate with an exit value: -1073741819. I can't seem to catch any error in a try except block as it seems to close python without any kind of control the file causing the problem opens fine in arcmap and only has 1 broken data source in it. source code is attached any suggestions would be welcome
