Hi, I'm a GIS major at The Ohio State University and two of our elective options are data structures using C++ and data structures using java. Which of these two languages would be best to learn? I've taken the intro to programming class with c++ and then I took the second level course with java so I know I'd say I'm at the beginner level to intermediate level with both of them. I'm just wondering which language would be best for preparing me for a job once I graduate? thanks, Jordan McMillan

Yes! http://www.codecademy.com/ is a very good site to use and it's free which makes it even more fantastic. I've actually already played around with this site before. The website offers more programming languages than python such as HTML, CSS, javascript and PHP just to name a few. I eventually plan on completing all of the these "skills" as they are called on the website. Knowledge is power! Thank you for your response.

For those of you who recommended signing up for the free Coursera python class would you recommend purchasing the "signature track" for the verified certificate? It costs $49. I guess it would probably be worth it if I was able to add it to my resume, but I'm not really sure if something like this would be worth it. I guess I think if I'm able to show my skills of coding in python I wouldn't really need to buy this certificate. what do you think?

Oh cool. I've done a little work with census data and parcels sections. Pretty interesting stuff.

Hi all, I'm interested in the job or internship title of your very first job/internship. What was that first job that got your foot in the door? A simple job title will suffice, but if you have the time to elaborate and maybe explain how you were able to score the job/internship or maybe even some advice that you might give to an undergraduate? If you're feeling super ambitious feel free to elaborate even further and give some examples of what your daily duties were at this first job. I've just started to apply for GIS related internships so I think it will be really cool to see what other people did when they were at their first step in their career. cheers!

Thank you Owen Earley and Xander Bakker for your replies. I checked out that free online course and it seems very promising so I signed up for it. Although I will say that I think the pace is very slow, but I think it'll work out okay because I'm already a full-time student at OSU.

Hi all, I'm currently looking for any information on learning how to code in the programming language of python. I'd say I'm at the intermediate level of understanding how to program in any given language given that I know and understand the syntax for that particular language. The languages I'm currently able to code in (to some extend) are: C++, Java, Html and MATLAB. Any information on good books to buy or websites to visit or even personal experiences are welcome. Thank you for your time, Jordan McMillan
