you wrote your post in 2012, it is now end of January 2014 and I am seeking some kind of glossary of terms I can use for creating ISO 19139 metadata, I often do not find enough information in the editing environment to clarify what exactly I am supposed to enter. It seems like there should be some kind of reference material, a glossary of terms...something more detailed than the clues offered. But I am not finding. I don't know if your quest was similar or different. Did you find any answers?

I can barely remember what I did this morning let alone 3 months ago, However, I believe I downloaded and installed an updated version. it is good to know that i am not the only one who operates this way...forging ahead through endless murkiness..somehow accomplishing products of some sort.

that's interesting jstrow, i haven't had a chance to try your routine. Since i have gone the route of exporting shapefiles or sdf files from Autocad Map instead of trying to read dwg files in ArcGIS, i probably won't try it soon either (just too busy with every other basic challenge i have on my plate...it never seems to end). Something (possibly related) I have noticed in ArcGIS 10.1 is that I have to redefine projection info, ie, the Autocad Map (or Civil 3d) projection info is interpreted by ArcGIS as a "custom" projection (though I am using a standard state plane projection in both softwares and I believe all the parameters are equal), and I have to redefine features to have projection definition designed by/in ARCGIS.

I have tried numerous times (and experimenting with all options) to export an xml file of a personal database so that I can try using the xml file in ArcGIS Diagrammer. Every attempt to export results in a fail message. I would like to export all data and schema at once, but wondering if maybe that's too much info to process I have reduced my selection to single feature classes, a few feature classes, have made sure to exclude 2 raster files included in my mdb file, have tried exporting as a zip instead of an xml...always I get a fail message even if I just try to summarize my selection. I could send a zip file if anyone wants to see if they can export my file. My mdb file is based on an ESRI ArcGIS utility model, but has a few additional feature classes, fields, and domains.

I was excited to find out through forums about the ArcGIS Diagrammer program, it seems to be what I need to help with presenting schema information. I have been able to download the ArcGIS Diagrammer program and open an xml file with it, so that's good, at least I can see how it looks and get an idea of what to do with it, and look at tutorials. But I have not been able to export any xml file from the personal geodatabse model I need to work with. I have tried copying the model and renaming it and putting it in a different location. I have tried all the various export options, (data or just schema, binary or larger format, with or without metadata). I have tried selecting only one feature class...even that didn't work. Every time I try I get a fail message. Sometimes when I right click on my mdb file in ArcCatalaog the export option is greyed out. Other times it is available. I have tried with same result in 2 locations, in one setup I have ArcCatalog 10.1 and ArcGIS Diagrammer 10.1 running on Windows 7, in another I have ArcCatalog 10.2 and ArcGIS Diagrammer 10.2 running on Windows 8.1.

just for the heck of it, i just tried loading a cad dwg into arcmap, you might be happy to know i had the same result you did...i dont see anything....and i know there are things in the drawing, alot of things. There are no objects in the tables ArcMap made for annotation, points, polylines, polygons, multipatch. at least you know it's not just you. 🙂 sorry i dont have more time to mess with this perplexity right now, i also don't have any Autocad to use where i am right now.

I wonder if you have figured out a solution yet. Someone replied regarding xref issues, that may have been the issue, I don't know. Another possibility is that the data you want to see is in some format which will not convey directly. I have been using Autocad map 3d 2014 to export shapefiles which I can use in ArcGIS. You can do that too, you can get a free trial version for a month. I am lucky to have a lot of years experience using Autcad though, dont know if you have that experience. I found that I had to also download an object enabler from Autodesk to see some of the AECC objects in Autocad Map, the water line alignments I needed. Even then, once I could see the AECC objects in Autocad Map, I found that I had to explode them before I could export them as shapefiles, and then I lost information I would have liked to save...such as station numbers and more. I am still trying to figure out the best way to export the lines and attributes the way I want to. I am looking at an Autodesk Civil 3d free trial now, to see what export options I get there. It looks like I can export AECC objects, but Civil 3d doesn't provide the tool to export a shapefile..so it's back to Autocad Map for that part of the process. One of these days I hope I can figure out the best way to do all these things, and perhaps without having to buy so many expensive softwares to do so few functions. I may have said a lot of things you find unhelpful, but I do know some things about Autocad dwgs, and I am trying to do something similar, so perhaps I can help. For me what is difficult is not knowing much about Civil 3d, but I hope to learn more in the next month.

Hi, I am also exploring a number of issues about data transfers from CAD (Autodesk Civil 3D 2013, 2014) to ArcGIS 10.1, am looking at forums today to see where are people doing same tasks, looking for some guidance myself. I believe the answer to your question is NO, you are going to get the polylines and the polygons (and more), but once you are there at that stage you can export either or both of those in the data format you choose in ArcGIS. However, I am not sure exactly about details of process you are using. Adrienne

I am a beginner using a personal database in ArcMap and ArcCatalog version 10.1, (though not a beginner in using ArcMap and Catalog). I would like to find detailed info on workflow protocol, or how to order my tasks, so I don't run into trouble with locks. It seems like I have often needed to shut down applications just to release locks, but even when I do that I am never sure if I will be able to do what I need to do. When is it safe to delete a lock file? I would love to start out with clear instructions about what I can do when and where and how locks will come into play as I edit a map and associated personal (or file) geodatabase. Are there any tutorials or videos on this subject? In my situation I am not yet concerned with other people needing to edit my files, my lock problems are only mine as a single user at one hard drive location. I am not working in a network environment. Thanks in advance.
