Update. Looks like this was in fact a firewall issue. Our IT Division researched it a little and had my Login "white listed" on our network and it seems to have solved the problem. Yay fast Bing maps!

Just an update from my post on 2/28. Could not figure out why the bing basemaps were not working well. So I've since completely uninstalled 2500 and went back to 1750 and the issue is gone. Bing maps base maps now load and perform normally. Not sure what the issue was but I'm ok with using 1750. I would have liked to use the portability (launch and run from usb drive) of 2500 but did not want to have a basemap issue in a presentation, etc. Would be nice to know if this is a known issue or maybe it is just my situation. For the installs: I completely uninstalled AGX and all expansion packs, erased all content in %temp%\E3, then restarted, then ran ccleaner to clean file system and registry, Restarted pc again, Then installed the AGX version of choice. I figure this is a pretty clean way of doing it. Anyone have any comments on this? Thanks.

Anyone else been noticing erratic behavior with only the Bing Basemaps in AGX 2500? All other basemaps work fine. The Bing Basemaps seem to work fine when I first open AGX but if it sits for a while, then I try to scroll around the streaming is really bad, and sometimes takes minutes to complete in one spot. very strange. Then when I change to a basemap other than Bing and they all work fine even after sitting for a while. 1750 did not have this issue and I did check another staff computer running 1750 on the same network with no issues. This tells me it's probably not a Bing/internet side issue and is probably on my side. I've cleard the E3 cash several times to see if it was a hiccup but has not remedied the problem. Anyone else having this issue? Or have a fix? Thanks.

ESRI- I think it's best to use the find window to look for features in layers. I know we can use the query to select features, but you have togo to tool and build query which most of explorer audiences do not really appreciate. I suggest ESRI should enable current Find function to be able to look for features in layers. Thank you, Serena I strongly second that suggestion.

Nike ;), I'd recommend not to base too much on pre released software. It is exciting but 9 times out of 10 software is pushed back because of issues in almost all instances. Games, OS's, Assorted programs, you name it. And 9 times out of 10 if they are release on time they were pushed out to early and there are bugs that make them more frustrating than if they were delayed. Developers know this and sometimes it cannot be helped. I understand you do not think certain aspects of the program should be implemented to your needs if it will push back release but perhaps you are in the minority when it comes to that opinion? I don't know but that could be a reason. From my experiences, if you are telling your staff this "software will be coming out at so and so time" make sure it won't curtail your efforts if it does not. I'm pretty sure it will come out but you have to have a plan B. That's just the way software works in my experiences. We use the AGX 1750 on many computers and have many different licenses here for paid ESRI products ranging all the way up the latter. I chose to push this Viewer out to our staff because it seemed like the most innovative and was also economical as you know, and I was prepared to deal with the inconsistencies a free product might bring with it. I might recommend that to all GIS Authors, don't jump the gun, wait till it comes out and is stable before you count on it too much.

Just wanted to say to the devs that are bringing us this free and very capable AGX Viewer THANK YOU! Ive been seeing alot of demands being put on a FREE Viewer that people seem to think is a paid replacement. Mark and the others working on this I'm sure are very busy and all the "seemingly" blatant demands are a little over the top. It's great to voice your opinions but harassing the devs will not help them. Kind suggestions to a dev is worth a thousand more productivity points than a heated demand. Software development is very mind taxing and takes ALOT of patience! I recommend before you roll out a free program to your administration/user base, to make sure (do some research) it is and will be what you need. I know we all have bosses breathing down our necks but don't transfer your lack of planning to your frustration with the devs that are providing a FREE product. Lets take a deep breath and come down to earth for a sec and thank Mark, Burnie and the Crew for all the hard work and imaginative thinking they are doing in bringing us this VERY CAPABLE FREE VIEWER. I'll Start: THANKS DEVS! KEEP IT UP!

Peter, I'm not sure why this issue is occuring but my next suggstion would be to delete your local ArcGIS Explorer layer cache. This can be done from within ArcGIS Explorer by clicking the Explorer button / pearl in the top left corner then selecting Advanced Options. See http://webhelp.esri.com/arcgisexplorer/1200/en/options_advanced.htm for more information. To do this outside the application, the cache goes into your temporary files under a folder called "E3". To easily find it you can type %temp%\E3 into the address bar of Windows Explorer. Then just select and delete the folders. Regards Mike Mike, Using your "Clearing Cache out side the application method" worked for the "No Basemaps in AGX Build 1750" problem for us. Thank you and FYI to all having similar issues, you might want to try this.

This issue has been solved for us (for the time being) by following these instructions from a similar thread and FYI deleting all cache within AGX Options did not work for us. Deleting Cache folders outside of application worked: Default Re: The basemap contains one or more invalid layers. I can access and download the basemap.nmf's in IE browser. Firefox and Chrome just bring up a page of code. When I open the .nmf I get a blank GIS Explorer map with only that basemap. If I try and change basemaps from the menu, it thinks, then nothing happens and I am still on the same basemap. Mark, do you know what the problem could be? Would my user cache file path be preventing the basemaps from being saved to cache or something? Please help.

Some of our users are also experiencing this issue including me. I am authoring this and we use it as a viewer. We all share the same network. Problem is only "some users" are having this issue where the thumbnails are displayed when the "Basemap" drop down menu is clicked on. When any of the 13 basemaps are clicked on it seems as it is going to try and load but never does and just resorts to a blank white back ground. Thing is they used to work when we first started using it about a year or so ago. All PC's are using WinXP. Also...when the map is first opened I have it defaulting to bing roads, as long as I reopen the map as it was default, bing roads will work just fine. If I try and switch basemaps or switch, save and reopen it's a no go. I've searched for the "basemapX.nmf and .png files and they are only found here: C:\Program Files\Explorer\basemaps\Server no other place on my OS seems to have them. On that note, my user directory file paths are a bit different: C:\Documents and Settings\County Employee. There is no /appdata or /local I have also browsed to the links in Mark's above screenshots and the browser will show the thumbnail .png and I also get a page full of code for the .nmf's. It is strange how some machines are having this issue and some never have. Can this info help to narrow the problem down? Thanks.

Great addition Cody, very useful. To those who are using your previous version, It may be worth mentioning that I needed to completely uninstall the previous add in from within the "Arcgis Explorer options" menu prior to this installation. Installing this new version over the previous resulted in only the previous version working for me. Just an FYI.

I have noticed it defaults to IE as well. Although I haven't had any problem with this for our uses so far. It would be nice to be able to use whatever browser is set to default by the user though.

Good to hear. It is always nice to have a viewer be "seem-less" to the average user 😄

Hey Cody, I noticed that with the useful "View Attribute Table" add in you created, it will pull the original field names. But when I use the clickable popup tool in Explorer, my Aliases are intact. What I can't figure out though is why the popup is titled and subtitled with the last field name always. I'm assuming it is just the way Explorer is written. I have tried moving the field placement up and down in ArcMap before exporting to layer package but to no avail. It will always title and subtitle the popup as the last original field name.

sp4? I'm running Win XP Pro sp3. Is that what you mean? Or do you mean .net framework 4? Or do you mean sp4 on Arcmap? Basemaps within Arcmap are working fine. Just Explorer desktop do not load.
