I paid for a single-user license, and installed Arc Pro, but it says my account "could not be used to authorize ArcGIS Pro because it is an ArcGIS public account"

I bought a 1-year single user license back in March 2019 and only installed desktop at the time, not Pro. I was hoping to download and use Pro now, and I had thought I could since I still had 6 months left for my license, but I received this message just now after downloading and installing the software.

If you want to work with the Named User license in Pro (which is the default) follow through the help topics here: https://pro.arcgis.com/en/pro-app/get-started/named-user-licenses.htm  In short, you just need to make sure that your ArcGIS Online organization (not public account) is activated and that you assign an ArcGIS Pro license to your username.

If instead you have reasons to use a single use license with Pro, you can still do that, but you'll first need to convert the named user to a single use authorization.  That is covered here: https://pro.arcgis.com/en/pro-app/get-started/convert-named-user-licenses-to-single-use.htm

I read through the links you both provided, and I think the problem is due to the fact that I have an Arc Online account through a university, but I bought a single-user license for ArcGIS for myself that isn't linked to the university. So maybe I could link accounts so that I could use Pro and Online? But also, once ArcMap goes away, how will anyone use ESRI products if they don't work for the government or a university? This sounds like a bad idea....

Sorry that you're running into frustration getting the ArcGIS Pro licensing set up, Tanya.  When you purchased your own Desktop single-use license, you should have also received a link to activate an ArcGIS Online organization.  Once that org is activated (and you would automatically be the Administrator) the Pro license is provisioned to that organization.  If there are issues getting up and running, please work with technical support as they'll be able to get you going.

Thank you!
