  • Where do you work and what is your role? Long time community lurker, first time poster. I'm Brian, the Community & Economic Development Director at Bear River Association of Governments, a regional planning organization in northern Utah, USA. We provide regional planning and technical assistance for 42 rural jurisdictions including small cities of 50,000 people and small towns of less than 500. I'm spending more and more time as a mid-level manager as opposed to a technical user, but I manage a couple of crack ArcGIS users that do great work for me. I'm working on a few new analysis projects in ArcGIS Pro to shake the rust off and keep growing my skillset.
  • What GIS success have you had this year and what product did you use?
My team is migrating to ArcGIS Pro and if we can manage that without breaking something, we'll call it a success. I'm also learning Python to contribute to script sets and batching.
  • What is your expertise (GIS related or not), and how can that help the community?
I have 15 years of experience in land use planning and public policy, mostly in the State of Utah, but with some exposure to other Rocky Mountain states and communities. I believe that the best decisions are made with the best information and strive to make sure that policy-makers and the public have the best data in the best accessible formats. I've worked on projects involving conservation, hazard mitigation, communication, land use administration, and good old cadastral management. Hopefully my experience facilitating communication between data producers and consumers can be of use to someone.

Hello, This is Terry Bonbrake, a retired Professional Hydrologist. I previously worked for civil engineering firms doing drainage design, running Hec-Ras models and submitting FEMA applications, etc. Now I'm on my own and would like to become more involved in environmental work; watershed management, nonpoint source pollution control and wetlands preservation/restoration.

My GIS success this year has been leasing a copy of ArcGISPro for Personal Use and starting a self-training program. As of now I am using the text book GIS Tutorial 1 for ArcGIS Pro as a training guide. I think its a very well written book, with a lot of detail, but occasionally I become lost as to the next action required to obtain the desired results. I'm not sure GeoNet is the correct site for me but I am looking for a resource where I can occasionally obtain advice, on these issues, with someone more experienced.

I have no previous experience with GIS but have been working pretty regularly the past few months in my tutorial book. This summer or fall I'm hoping to start an online GIS Masters program and even though the university indicated no previous GIS experience is required, I would like to become familiar with GIS before I start the program.

I live in the Mid-West, where there are a lot of nonpoint source pollutants, from agricultural fields and large industrial parks, contaminating our water. I feel have a working knowledge of GIS would be a real benefit in providing assistance to land owners and small agencies.

A little late but my favorite place is 29 55' 21" N  90 07' 59" W

  • Where do you work and what is your role?

My name is Scott and I am a retired petroleum geologist from Houston, TX.  I now live in San Antonio.  I had some exposure to ArcMap during my career but was not a primary user.  I always          enjoyed map-making and working on the computer, so it was natural for me to increase my skills and abilities in GIS after leaving the working world.

  • What GIS success have you had this year and what product did you use?

In 2017 I attended training courses at Esri San Antonio and completed various tutorials.  I achieved the ArcMap Desktop Entry Specialist certification in September.  In 2018 I purchased the          ArcMap 10.6 Personal Use license.  I am familiar with ArcGIS Pro but primarily use ArcMap.

  • What is your expertise (GIS related or not), and how can that help the community?

I became interested in flood hazard mapping after experiencing hurricane Harvey and started a website to educate the public regarding various aspects of flood and storm risk.

I utilize ArcMap and my familiarity with flood and storm risk elements to make individualized reports for property owners.  I also like to update and edit Open Street Map for my areas of interest          and then use it as a base in ArcMap when making various display maps.

  • Latitude and longitude coordinates of my favorite location are: 30.393534, -86.495781

Scott, Welcome to GeoNet! Let me know if you need help finding anything. We currently do not have a dedicated spot for ArcMap questions/ info, we are working on that!  But a few places that might help get you started are: ArcGIS Desktop Installation support‌ and New to GIS‌ and Implementing ArcGIS‌.

Hi Michelle!

Where do you work and what is your role?

Currently, I am a doctoral student at Texas A&M University in the Urban and Regional Science program. I serve as TA and my research interest is mapping long-term neighborhood recovery post natural disasters with a focus on socially vulnerable populations.

What GIS success have you had this year and what product did you use? (big or small - no win is out of bounds)

My GIS success this year has been learning ArcPro and teaching my students how to use Community Analyst for their final project, which is creating a community profile of their favorite city!

What is your expertise (GIS related or not), and how can that help the community?

My expertise is having empathy for the people I work with in my research field. I believe having a heart and strong communication skills will greatly improve the conditions of neighborhoods post-natural disaster and hopefully improve their overall sense of community through map-making via participatory mapping.
