Welcome to GeoNet!

We are a community that collaborates, learns and shares together. To help you connect with other members, we started this introduction thread. Think of this as your intro to GeoNet networking and a chance to get to know  each other as we begin our GeoNet journey.

Please introduce yourself to the rest of the community by sharing your answers to the questions in the comments section below.

  • Where do you work and what is your role?
  • What GIS success have you had this year and what product did you use? (big or small - no win is out of bounds)
  • What is your expertise (GIS related or not), and how can that help the community?

Bonus Round! Post the coordinates to your favorite place on earth.

note: this post has been archived, and is available in read only mode. To create a new introduction, please visit the new GeoNet Member Introductions‌ space. Thank you!

Where do you work and what is your role?

My name is Dan Hummel and I work for the Defense MIA/POW Accounting Agency at the University of Wisconsin-Madison as a postdoctoral fellow.

What GIS success have you had this year and what product did you use?

I am new to GIS and studying if it will be a good fit for helping with my DPAA work, which is primarily using historical research to help identify potential locations for MIA remains from American WWII soldiers.

What is your expertise (GIS related or not), and how can that help the community?

I am a historian and have watched videos and read on ArcMap. My main goal with using ArcMap is to plot the movement of soldiers over a certain area (focusing on northern Papa New Guinea) using the time lapse function in order to visualize what happened.

Hi Michelle,

My name is Jim Ouimette (pronounced "wee-met"). I just purchased ArcGIS for Personal Users yesterday.  I'm a retired research engineer with a love for maps but very little experience creating them. I remember when ESRI first got started back in the 1970s I think.  Your headquarters are just a few blocks from where my 91 year old mother lives in Redlands, so i think of you often, even though I have little experience with your products and services. I bought ArcGIS for Personal Users because it is in my price range and I want to learn.

I live in a over 55 active senior community in Sonoma County, California.  I have been making maps for our Oakmont Village Association as an unpaid volunteer using Maptitude software that the Association purchased. I really like Maptitude, but it doesn't belong to me, and the products that I make for the Association are their intellectual property, as it should be.  The maps I make focus on detail down to the individual property parcels in our 3200-unit association.  I tend to start with Excel spreadsheets from the County assessors office which provide parcel numbers, site addresses, property type, etc.  I augment this info with proprietary info from our association such as what HOA the unit is in, when purchased by whom, ages of purchasers, rental or owned, etc.  I love it. Our City Planning staff provided me ESRI shapefiles and associated files to create these cool parcel maps that I can overlay extra info, such as Google satellite images.

So I'm an old guy wanting to learn new tricks working at a parcel scale in a small community.  I probably have more to learn than to contribute currently.

My favorite location is anywhere my motorhome and Jeep. takes my wonderful wife and labradoodle - - usually out to the boondocks bewteen death Valley and Area 51.  I'm not providing coordinates!

Regards,

Jim

Jim,  Welcome, and congrats on your personal use purchase! You have come to the right place, in GeoNet no question is too basic or difficult. Our community members are a great wealth of resources as are our staff and happily jump in and answer any questions you may have.

A great way to get started is to use search ( Video Link : 4586‌)

or from one of the landing pages to find  Product Communities‌, Developer Communities‌ or Industry Communities‌.

Cheers and all the best with your travels!

Hi Everyone,

I am Marcus Idoko. I just got hired few days ago by Danish Refugee Council and I work specifically with the Danish Demining Group (DDG), stationed at Maiduguri, Nigeria. I play the role of GIS specialist. I manage excel data and other spatial/attribute data for mapping and visualization of situations and trends in Internally displaced People (IDP) and refugees camps in North East Nigeria using ArcGIS Pro

I engaged in flying drone most of this year to captured high resolution data to produce Orthomosiac, DTM and NDVI. I created shapefile out of drone data and also did some cool 3Ds of built environments for spatio temporal dynamics of city fringes that show dramatic landuse change and conurbation typical of developing country facing explosive population growth.

My expertise is in the area of  application of GIS and Remote Sensing Technologies( particularly drone data) for modeling and monitoring landscape dynamics and how these resonate with the changing climate. I am aspiring to get involved in use of drone/gis/remote sensing as  tool to optimise deminig workflow.

Greetings. I am a software engineer, and am approaching retirement age. I recently accepted a job with a company that is doing property assessments for the local county's tax department. Therefore, they have an ArcMap which has a layer that is based on property lines.

My past mapping experience was with the Illinois Department of Transportation and the Illinois State police, who used a mapping program for the electronic "Motorist Collision Report" that an officer would use to document a car wreck on the expressway.

Can't wait to learn how to add a layer. Any suggested YouTube tutorials?

Thanks,

Cal

Hi Cal Niemi,  Welcome to GeoNet! This is a great place to ask questions and research product information. We don't yet have a dedicated ArcMap space (coming in the future), but there are a lot of really knowledgeable members of the community to ask questions of. You can use the search to see what is already out there. Here is a quick tutorial on using the spotlight search:  Video Link : 4586.  You might find your question has already been asked and answered, if not go ahead and ask it!

This group might have some info  ArcGIS Desktop Installation support‌ as well as Implementing ArcGIS‌. And you can check out Esri Training‌ for more in-depth knowledge.

Best of luck!
