I've tried this several ways. Prolly missing something. I want the background color of the MXD to be a certain color other than white. If I set this in the MXD (e.g. frame color) the background in the map service is still white. I've even tried backgroundColor for the Map object but to no avail. Any ideas?

Thanks!

I was able to change the color using Frame background property.
Here were my steps.

- Right Click on the data frame
- Select Properties
- Select "Frame" tab
- Change the background color
- Apply and save the MXD
- Restart the map service
- Clear the rest cache

Yup. Tried that as well. No luck. And you made this work in a DynamicMapServiceLayer, Drew?

Yes, its using a dynamic service.
I did some more testing and I almost thought I was going crazy because it was not working.
It seems to only work when the output format is JPG.

Make sure your layers ImageFormat is set to JPG

By default, the background is transparent. You can still use PNG if you turn the transparency off:

That explains why JPG was only working for me... Makes sense  🙂
