I need to create a multi user database is SDE out of date or do I need to store data in another way?
An SDE Geodatabase is now referred to as an Enterprise Geodatabase since you are no longer required to run the ArcSDE Post Installation. An Enterprise Geodatabase can be created easily using GP tools.
For a multi-user geodatabse, you will want to create an Enterprise Geodatabase. Here is a great link that shows a comparison of the three different types of geodatabases:

I am a dyed in the wool fan of SDE technology / Enterprise Geodatabase / Multiuser Geodatabases. (Did I cover the most relevant terminologies?) For my situation this approach to spatial data editing, storage, distribution, and security is an efficient means to an end. That said, I would be interested to know if/what other options are available.
