Hello,

My employer is ready to pay for ArcGIS web development courses and wants me to provide them with a list of courses and expenses. Please share any info you might have on different course lines and all price ranges available. I would like to extend my python capabilities also. If anybody has any review of courses they are working on in JAVA API or any other languages used for ArcGIS web development please share your experiences and suggestions.

Thanks,

Nikki

Hey Freddie,

Thanks for taking the time to answer my questions really appreciate. To answer your questions

1. Yes i am working as a GIS analyst right now but i don't have GIS programming knowledge that is I mostly work with desktop mapping and data analysis.

2. I know how programming works I learnt basic Python and VB I know how databases work and some SQL

3. I haven't used any java script.

4. No i don't have any experience in web development.

5. I prefer class like environment where you start from basics and there is a flow to the course and you go step by step and all the required areas are covered. But it doesn't have to be a live class it can be recorded video class with step by step instructions and i am happy to do some reading on my own. It will be great if there is a way to get your questions answered in case i don't understand something or i am struck.

and if you can guide me what all I need to learn to be successful in web map development.

Thanks for your time and effort.

Nikki.

In regards to the GIS portion of learning the JavaScript API, I would suggest taking the Esri Instructor Led Training courses.

Developing Web Apps with ArcGIS API for JavaScript

http://training.esri.com/gateway/index.cfm?fa=catalog.courseDetail&CourseID=50133569_10.x

I know that the class is expensive, but I think it's worth it. Most of the people on my team take this class to get a solid understanding of the API so that we can help users adopt it. I don't think you can beat the attention to detail that is provided in this class.

For the Web Programming (i.e. HTML5, pure JavaScript, CSS, etc.) there should be tons of schools and online programs available at various prices that can help you with this. If your organization offers tuition reimbursement I'd suggest finding a university that offers extensions courses or a college that offers online training. I once used the OReilly School of Technology for this type of training, but I believe they're currently restructuring their online offerings.

I know that on my team we have to learn tons of different technologies. A couple of sites that we use on my team to keep up to date with clients are listed below.

DevelopMentor

https://www.develop.com/

Pluralsight

http://www.pluralsight.com/

Lynda

http://www.lynda.com/

Udemy

https://www.udemy.com/

With the learning style you described I think you'd find any of the above sites useful. They all provide courses for various topics that you can review at your own pace and the prices aren't too bad.

As others have mentioned, the training.esri.com page has many self-paced and/or instructor led classes, as well as links to many (free) 60-minute webinars that are very topic focused and very good.

For Developer training (inexpensive and instructor led) here is a search, but you can look for others too.

Esri Training

I recommend the Python class http://training.esri.com/gateway/index.cfm?fa=catalog.courseDetail&CourseID=50131064_10.x   and the JavaScript class http://training.esri.com/gateway/index.cfm?fa=catalog.courseDetail&CourseID=50133569_10.x   Yes they are expensive for the number of days, but you get the workbook and can continue learning after the class.

There are other (free) videos Esri Video | Videos Covering GIS Events, Products, People, & Topics  Tat are worth watching, including technical sessions from some of the Developer Summits and user conferences.

I would suggest that you check out this course: An Introduction to Interactive Programming in Python on Coursera. Link: Coursera - Free Online Courses From Top Universities

I would second this recommendation.  I found it to be a fun, face-paced, challenging course. It was a single course when I took it, but now they have broken it into two--not sure if the time frame is a little more relaxed.
