I have been working on a few custom widgets for the Web App Builder, but I would like some input as to what widget/functionality people are wanting most.
The WAB has several great OTB widgets but what (realistic) widgets are missing and would be (in your opinion) great to have?
I did, but I only have a free developer account. You need one of the paid accounts to be able to get access.

An interactive filter widget would be super useful. You can select a field, pull all values from the server, and let user select one and then dynamically generate a definition query and apply it.

I like the idea of an interactive filter as well. I thought that was going to be what the query filter was going to do. I thought when it was asking for unique values that it was going to show the users a drop down box to choose what to query by. It would be great if it did a multi select box. So they could select five states to highlight.
I also saw the inbetween for value and thought it would allow users to select between two different values. For example select all states where population was between 1,000,000 and 5,000,000. Would be great if it created an inbetween slider
And to be super awesome it would be nice if it created its own layer that went into the data grid. This would be the best feature ever!
I'm wanting a simple measure tool that will work on a phone. The default widget doesn't work very well on a phone.
I'd like to see an improved measure widget as well, with more options to configure measurement text font, line/area measurement symbology, and length/area units, etc. We've been using http://www.arcgis.com/home/item.html?id=36a80475e5d740279854398d3f7b6d01 for our flex apps which allows us to see measurements on the line segments that we draw rather than in the measurement tool dialog. We use projected data so that's also a consideration in the development of measure widget.

Filter widget/functionality like that already built into the AGO Javascript map viewer: where in the latter you go Content->click the drop down arrow next to the layer->context menu opens with Filter option->Filter dialog opens and enables end user to create|execute|edit their own query on a series of expressions.
The WAB Query widget looks similar to the AGO Filter tool, but former doesn't allow end user to build their own query (as far as I can tell). Moreover, the WAB Query widget at beta 2 is so buggy and unusable, I'm not able to make sense of it.
At WAB beta 2, seems ESRI could just take the AGO Filter tool and add it to WAB (and even replace most of the Query widget code with AGO Filter code).
A widget that allows us to display attributes from one-to-many related tables in a popup window. In addition to configuring the popup window with attributes from the layer in the webmap, this widget would allow the user to configure the popup window to display attributes from related tables. So you have a layer being displayed in your webmap that is related to several different tables. This widget would allow the user to configure which attributes from which related tables to display in the popup, along with the attributes from the original layer itself.
It is odd the WAB popup doesn't even have the Show Related Records tool already built into the AGO Javascript Map Viewer.

Show Related Records appears at the bottom of the popup window when you click a feature. On click Show Related Records the related records are displayed in a table.
I would like to see a widget that allows users to save there layout in file maybe just a json file that can be loaded back into the map so they don't have to change the map location, layers, etc... This would helpful to if they could send a file to other users who can see the same view.
The filter template in AGOL is about useless if you have a large number of filters. First enhancement to this template would be to allow a drop-down box to define the field name to filter on, so the user doesn't have to type it in. Second would be to add a check mark next to each filter. This check mark would then enable that filter, so you can test different scenarios in your data. Currently every filter must be evaluated in order for it to run, which is very cumbersome when you have a large number of filters to evaluate.
Did you ever find the widget you were looking for? I am interested in the same thing.

Like others, I would be consuming REST services directly from my own server and not via AGOL webmap/Portal. For the basemap switcher I need it to recognize my cached map services that are in our State Plane projection. The AGOL basemap switcher doesn't seem to recognize my published basemap services as basemaps. But maybe I am missing something simple regarding that.
Related records is now available in in popup windows in AGOL. I configured my popup to display records from my layer, and from multiple tables related to my layers. Thanks Esri!
Well, actually the related records are showing up with values of 1 and 0, instead of showing the actual values. If you click show related records, you can get at the related records, but I want it to show up in the popup, and only see the related records for the feature I clicked on, not the entire related table. Anyone know if this is expected behavior, or am I doing something wrong?

I have added right click functionality to the out of the box widget. I have to give credit to David Spriggs as he has this functionality in his configurable viewer. I used this to update the directions widget for the web app builder. One thing to mention is the Directions pane has to be active to get the right click functionality. May be close to what you are looking for. Replace the Widget.html and the Widget.js in your directions widget folder with these. Make sure you clear your cache to see the updates.
I'd like to put in a vote for the Elevation Profile widget as well.
We need an IDENTIFY tool, please. It is one of the most basic tools that defines a GIS. Users want to know the attributes associated with the geospatial features.
I very strongly agree with Joe about the dire need for an Identify Widget. Without one, WAB is completely useless for my needs. All other widgets are secondary IMO. Other than the (current) lack of an ID widget, out-of-the-box WAB capability is quite good (including TOC/layer switching, bookmarks, measure, draw, legend, attribute widget, and more).

Since Robert has invited a widget wishlist, I am dreaming about a tool/option for a WAB ID widget that would import custom Flex ID widget XML! My Flex ID widget XML is 1554 lines long!
I vote for an "Enhanced Search Tool"...the query widget is okay for some data, but a "fuzzy" search tool with auto-complete, similar to the Geocoder Widget, is a must. I built a jQuery auto-complete search input for a custom app, which worked well. Maybe I will attempt to port that type of search tool into a ArcGIS Web AppBuilder widget.
Next on my list would be to add "url parameter" logic to the applications...so you could pass in a parcel number via the url automatically zoom to a feature. This is a must for us.
Also, wondering if future versions of the Web AppBuilder will allow for upload of custom built widgets into the ArcGIS Online hosted app? I have no problem running the AppBuilder/published sites on our local web server..but it might be nice to be able to used the Esri hosted solution with your own custom widgets. Maybe this already exists and I missed it because the release is so new?
I made my first web app from the Web App Builder a few weeks back after the Beta announcement, and I was disappointed by the lack of a customizable search tool. The query builder did not work well at all, I could not figure out how to create a query that used a pick list for search criteria based on current values or coded domains.
My prioritized list of custom widget tools would be.
1. Search tool - that can be customized with query functions like wildcards or pick lists; the tool should also include overlay functions for searching others layers based on proximity, we use this for generating mailing lists from our property layers.
2. Measure or Draw tool with realtime feedback of measurements as the users are drawing.
3. Google Street View and Bing Birdseye tool that allow the user to click on a location and opens either and/or both in a an interactive window of its own or in a separate browser tab.

Draw widget like you did for the Flex Viewer - especially with the measurement built in to it.
We use your eLayerList, eDraw, Splash and eSearch Flex widgets all the time (Go Robert!), much better functionality. In addition to your enhanced basics, what I would like is an enhanced Editor widget that allows an entry to pick-up the spatial attributes (X, Y) and any feature attributes for specified fields in designated services. So if I enter a point feature (e.g. damaged road sign) in a map application with county and road layers present (and designated) the widget would populate the identified point feature fields with the county name, road id/name and nearest measure (plus X, Y location).
I would like to see an enhancement to the AGOL filter template that allows the user to choose from a drop-down list the values to filter on, instead of typing it in as it now is. So the user defines the fields to filter on in the web map, then in the template, you allow them to choose from a drop-down list the values from the filter field to filter out.
Also, the ability to turn a filter on/off when needed would be invaluable to analyze different scenarios of your data. So if you have 18 filters defined in your webmap, having the ability to turn specific filters on/off would enable us greater flexibility in analyzing our data.
Robert, I know that we want a 'Point-and-Polygon' widget.
Where the user enters an address in a specific field and it 'not only' drops a dot on the map for that address, but it activates either a 'Meta-Popup' or even just a targeted pop-up.
For instance, if I create a council district map with nothing but council districts on it, I would like to add the 'point-and-polygon' widget to the map. I configure the widget to target the council district feature class, maybe configure a meta-popup in the widget settings. User opens the map. Enters their address in the widget provided field. A dot gets dropped on the map AND the pop-up displays automatically. No extra clicks by the user.
If all it did was trigger the pop-up for a targeted layer(s) that would be just fine.
- Spatial buffer like in eSearch and Upload shapefile will do it for me in the short-term.

Enhanced coordinate locator.
We're using a Flex one posted some time ago in the Gallery (not the one by you, link is long lost). For a public safety application, we have a requirement to enable web map users to search by coordinates in DD.DDD, DD MM SS, DD.mmmm, and UTM (cell phone pings), as well as identify a location on a web map and be able to copy those coordinates from mouse click for dispatch to EM teams or helo pilots. Since ESRI announced the sunset of Flex, and with release of the Web App Builder, there is SOME of that functionality out of the box but it doesn't meet EM needs. The Flex one allows users to accomplish this with either a mouse click, or a right-mouse click. Additional steps or complexity doesn't work for them, as you can imagine, emergency management often doesn't allow the time for non-technical users pull out their trigonometry book and convert DD.DDD to DD MM SS.
I've tried rolling up my sleeves and creating such a Widget but I am no java programmer and can't even get a custom theme to work.

I second the motion. The Portal/AGOL requirement for WAB is an unnecessary hassle for some.
Thumbs up for ability to do what we could do with the Flex Viewer....without having to rely on Portal/AGOL!
I'll probably make a separate thread for this, but I've created a widget that lets you add your own hosted MapServices to your WAB Apps as you would in the Flex Viewer, rather than needing to go through AGOL/Portal WebMaps.

Your basemap will still need to come from Portal/AGOL, but otherwise you provide direct URLs to your own MapServices via the widget's configuration settings. The MapServices should load and display as usual in the map, and cooperate with the Legend, LayerList, and Attribute Table widgets. Click-To-Identify functionality won't work currently, because the current WAB implementation relies on Portal for all the popup info.
It's currently just something to play around with, but if this is something people find useful, I plan on expanding functionality in the future (ie: specifying sublayers, Image and Feature Services, click-to-identify, etc). It's not an in-panel widget, so you'll need to follow a few extra steps in the project's Readme file above, so make sure to read through the documentation.
Building a widget to use your own hosted services would be awesome. Making an Identify widget or configuring the existing Identify widget to use your own hosted services would also be awesome.

Could you create a widget that removes Web AppBuilder's dependency on Portal/AGOL? In all seriousness, an Advanced Identify widget would be ideal (one where you could identify within buffers or user drawn polygons).

Hi Robert, I know your list is large and getting larger by the day I'm sure. One thing still lacking is a decent print widget. It would be great to have a way to grab the image on the screen along with the selected data and produce a single page image (property report in my case), but the use of this could be endless for all walks of GIS life.

I couldn't agree more with Norm. A print widget that can be generated at certain scales or extents, comibined with attribute data into a table, from either a selection or query would be a wonderful addition. While im wishing, if it could include fancy widget charts/graphs like in Operation dashboards would be a home run. For us, hard copy output is still an critical part of our workflow.

Myself and a colleague are producing a web app, it is pretty basic, but there is one piece of functionality that seems to be missing with the Edit Widget, is the ability the add points using absolute x,y. Have you come across any custom built widgets for this?
Have you also thought about creating custom widgets for the JavaScript API as well; I wouldn't mind learning and helping create widgets in that area, but I'm not sure how to create one on my own yet.

I would like a widget that lets users switch from one web mapping application to another where it passes the extent so that the newly opened web mapping application opens with the same extent. Ideally, it would also have common layers turned on/off. User interaction would be similar to the Basemap widget.
Someone earlier requested a widget that would allow users to switch the underlying Portal web map. That would pretty much accomplish the same thing, although changing between web mapping applications also may change the widgets available to users.
Another widget would be one that runs when the web mapping application is opened and parses the calling url so that a specificed layer would be searched and the features would be zoomed to when the web mapping application opens. This is needed so the web mapping application can be embedded in other systems and open zoomed in to a specific feature.

the Enhanced Search Widget is a great tool, especially I like the option "All" ) But with Query Widget one's can set up multiple queries for a number of layers, and user will see the list of those queries.
Another thing: it would be great if the result of query is visible in the table attribute widget.

The eSearch has the ability to have multiple query per layer as well. The results of a search can also be displayed in the Attribute Table widget if you set the "add as operational layer" option. I have no plans to change my UI to resemble how the Query widget looks as far as choosing the query. I just thought I would let you know that almost all the features you have mentioned are already part of the eSearch.

For the first point, i made an url widget wich tracks extents change on url and go to the extent passed in url on load :

It would be possible to add a mecanism to parse page links with class "link" and to replace a pattern ({{extent}} for example) with "extent (extent=xmin,ymin,xmax,ymax)".
Therefore, you could add links with dynamic extent param (http:/myurl/anApp/?{{extent}}).
@Robert, would you add to your esearch widget a mecanism to push esearch params in url ? So It would be easier for users to share links.
NB : it could be done with publishData and URL widget (No, i'm not being parochial for a minute ;-) )

Several people have mentioned a filter widget and I just can't seem to get my head wrapped around the concept. Could you explain in detail what this widget would do and what a workflow would look like?
I am thinking like this Crime Mapper or like the ability of Apply filters or Filtering Your Data | SSP Innovations .
Where you can select a layer and more or less definition query results based on some basic rules.
The background could be use <Field_name> <Operator> <Value, Field or Unique>.
The filter needs to be easy enough for anyone to use. Basically select what you want to see in as drop down options.
I am looking for a way to display, for example, only a type of crime, a day of the week and the year.
My goal will to have the crime mapper fell to it. Where I can filter a result and have the heat map change based on what I filter out of the map.
If this is not enough detail I can try to explain it better.

Enhanced Table of Contents Widget
I think we need a TOC widget that would allow for grouping feature layers, so you can turn them on and off in groups instead of individually. I produce online utility maps, and I would like our clients to be able to turn on and off all layers in a system instead of doing each separately.
It looks like some work has been done on this topic already, and it's something I've been looking for in the ArcGIS Online web viewer for ages.

I saw this post. I know I already mentioned this to you but adding the attribute table, or in some way hijacking the attribute table that is present in the WAB, and using that with the eSearch tool in a similar way as the Flex builder would be greatly appreciated.
The current attribute window is ok... but there seems to be a lack of control about what layers get shown in it... not to mention it can be slow since it is trying to find all records in the visible extent.
Nicholas, check out Robert's answer in Can attribute table results be limited to map extent by default? for simple fix for filtering attribute table by extent. This did the trick for me.
A Few other tips a included in Tips (LocalLayer widgets) for more customization and Updating (may help with others too) in case any of those tips will help for now.

We would like for the existing Splash Screen Widget to have the capability to splash every time the site is viewed. currently, it writes a cookie and does not appear again when using the same browser, unless cookies are cleared. We need to have it appear every time, even when refreshing the browser, because we have legal and use info that the user must acknowledge each and every time.
Also, in the Finder app, the query tool has a more elegant interface than the existing query tool in web Appbuilder. It would be nice to have this feature as another query widget option available in web appbuilder.
A zoom tool where you can click and drag on an area to zoom would be nice.

While we are not programmers, and do not have a web server to host these apps, we can certainly comment out code/copy paste, etc so long as the app will continue to be hosted on esri servers. However, we don’t even know where to find the code section to which you refer.
Our comments were directed more towards providing out of the box functionality to customize the splash wizard to display when one accesses the app each and every time, not just the first time. If this involves modifying some lines of code, so long as the resultant app/widget will remain hosted on esri’s web servers, then we welcome the opportunity to try; we would just need a little more guidance as to where these code snippets are located.

For item #3: Zoom tool. You can hold down shift and drag a box on the map to zoom in and ctrl + shift and drag a box pon the map to zoom out. I personally really like the scrolling zoom (mouse) and pinch to zoom (mobile).

I like the Finder app option you mentioned as an option but maybe the new Search tool Search multiple sources | ArcGIS API for JavaScript is a better option to make into a widget. One reason I really like either of these options is so I do not have to have a locator that I would need to build on a regular basis and add it to the geocoder widget. Both of these options look at live data.

Yes, this Find widget, which we’ve used in the Finder App is simple for our users. The Query widget in Web Appbuilder, while very useful for certain cases, requires the user to click several times and other nuances (at least as far as I can get it to work). This solution is more simple for our users and we would like to use a widget like this in our Web Appbuilder application. We are not programmers.

Rose, although not exactly what you are looking for, your can create geoPDF's thru the print widget....although you may have to have a custom print service, but the default print service may also have it by default (I think it does....but can't remember, since we also needed some customization so created a custom print service on our local ArcGIS Server)
I think a couple of good widget possibilities would be a Static Image Widget and then maybe something like a "Contact Us" widget that lets a user submit questions/comments about the map and it is E-mailed to the appropriate people.

It would be good to have a trace tool within the draw widget on WAB. This would allow users to draw along existing boundaries in the map.

How about something similar to the import services from ArcGIS Online Flex Widget. But maybe have it come from your Open Data Site. The EPA's EJSCREEN has this function, but not in the WAB widget format.
When you open the link go to Map Data then go to Search Available Data.
It pretty much functions the same way as the old Flex Import Services widget.
By the way huge fan of all the work you did with the Flex Viewer Widgets. Great JOB!

I am not sure about a map pages/map book widget... Right now I can not even picture the coding workflow. A print with an overview is more of a custom print layout and would not require a specific widget.
Is there a way to modify the later list widget so layers can be group, and turned on and off as a group instead of individually? This would be very useful for utility maps.

People have been wanting that for years now (back in Flex and now) and the issue is very complicated from a developers stand point. Back in Flex someone came out with a grouped TOC but it was actually multiple tocs which worked but was not good practice programming wise and was a big memory drain.
I have 2 items on my wish list right now. A replacement for the Flex Aloha Widget and the Flex Address Inspector Widget.
Better filtering / querying widget would be awesome. A widget that would allow the end user to "build" their own query against the data would be ideal but maybe not realistic. So in lieu of the ideal option, here are my takes on improving the current query widget:

HI Robert. Something I missed from the old FV was the generic Query Builder. Just to allow the user to build their own queries using layers in web map (or defined by config). Short of defining all layers, attributes and values in the eSearch, the generic query builder would be a great addition.

However, while I have it hardwired to services I will go through and make a generic example and post it to a site this week or next, with the widget 'done' except export results to the attribute table. I need a widget that gives the ability to add a point/edit a feature service based on coordinates. So, search by coordinates and drop a point at the exact coordinates. So simple in desktop, but I haven't come across this yet. Has this been created?

Right now... the only thing I'd want is the ability to edit related tables/records in a web app! You can do this with collector but not with AGOL.

I think I've identified the pertinent code section that refers to the graphics index [0]. If we could just loop a cursor through the indices that are present I think it would work, but I can't figure out how to do it (not very good with json). Can you help? I'd really like the ability to edit record from table grid. Select the feature -> highlight the record on the grid (& vice versa) and give you the option to edit that record right on the grid.
Reason: case that you have multiple multiple features on top of each others, it's hard/ and take too much time to loop through all features to find the record you want from identify and edit.

I would really like to have a widget that would sketch/draw based on input bearing and distance.
A widget that factors in the extent and visible features of a particular layer...when printing a pdf the legend only shows those features form the layer that are visible in the extent. This is capable in ArcMap (since 10.1 release, I think) and I am wondering why it isn't OTB for WAB. I need this very badly, but I am not a programmer. I am researching and researching and it seems no one has come up with this yet.

We have shifted to using Latitude Geographic's Geocortex platform so I haven't used WAB beyond the beta, but doesn't the print function use the Export Web Task from Server? If so, you can implement those legend abilities in your map templates. But... you'll find that implementing legends for any viewer that isn't fairly focused in scope can be a lesson in futility. Hopefully others more directly knowledgeable with WAB can confirm or debunk my assumptions.
It does use Export Web Task, and I'm not having the issue of layers not in the extent not printing. Any Layer that is activated in the layer list shows up in the legend. Brian do you have a custom Print Service?

Reference my comment regarding my lack of WAB use beyond the beta. My experience with the Export Web Task comes from multiple years of using the Flex Viewer. I implemented my own print templates (letter-size up to E-size) for the Export Web Task, which is generally a matter of creating a layout in ArcMap and saving the project without any data layers within it. (I added data initially to help visualize how the layout might react to various data but removed it before final use.)
I followed a help document from Esri. Tutorial: Publishing Additional Services for Printing seems to be a "current" version of what I originally used. I recommend registering your folder of layouts because you can then tweak your existing layouts and also add more into the folder without a lot of extra hassle.
Hopefully someone with a bit more direct WAB experience will comment and fill in any details specific to printing with WAB.

There is nothing specific to WAB when it comes to printing or using custom templates/print services. The only thing that really separates WAB from other platforms like Flex Viewer is the UI that interacts with the print service. I personally have not done any testing on the ability of the mxd used by the print template to limit the legend contents but I have my suspicion that it would have minimal impact.

Also, a better "Add Data" widget. One that supports the adding of REST endpoints, Shapefiles, and GDB's. (with option to add layer to your layer list)

This would effectively replace ArcGIS Desktop and ArcGIS Server with a web app, which is a scary thought. Any javascript gurus know how to crack open and view/edit a GDB?
There is an add shapefile widget already out there if you do a search, and it seems the new version of WAB 2.1 has an add data button. Isn't an SDE feature service the same thing as editing a GDB?
After reviewing some other input, I would agree on an "Enhanced Layer List" widget. One that supports groupings of layers by tabs or some other clever way.

The problem with that type of widget is that it requires a custom print template for the mailing labels and I have no plans to host a custom print service on my ArcGIS Server for everyone to use.

I use roberts Enhanced search widget (export to csv) in conjunction with a mail merge from microsoft word. Works a treat.
A Label Widget. One that generates labels based off of an attribute(s) with more placement options and the ability to move them around.

In addition to the eDraw custom widget that already exists, I think it would be worth it to have a slicker looking Draw widget that allows for editing, exporting, and importing drawings. eDraw is showing issues in the newest version of WAB Developer Edition so having another option would be fantastic. Love your widgets, Robert!
If it's not already available (I haven't located it yet) I'd like an imagery slider widget that will let you toggle historical imagery layers easily. This is common in many regional applications.
It would be nice to have a widget where you can enrich a list of location with values from multiple rasters, in the same way the Geo Lookup widget works. I have been looking for something similar to this with no luck.

Enhancements to the legend widget in WAB would be nice. Currently it has "Auto Update" and "Respect Current Map Scale", but it would be beneficial if it respected the current map extent as well, showing only features that occur within the data frame for that map. This functionality exists within desktop, but doesn't seem to have been applied by ESRI Online.

I Ezequias - I like the idea of this too, but I think that ESRI should be adding this functionality as part of widgets' standard development.

I just mean that that functionality should come standard with the widget. The ability to summarize within some drawn extent that works like the current 'Summarize Within' widget but allows output to a graphics collection instead of a feature layer that has to be stored in your AGOL content.
But come to think of it, Robert's current eSearch widget is really already doing that as long as you have are returning your eSearch results as operational layer, numeric fields will return count, min, max, mean and sum values.

When the Time Slider is on the pop up window honours the "Time Frame" but the Summarize Widget or Attribute Table widget does not.

Indeed it does look as though this would require some effort. I've been in contact with ESRI support who have moved this on to the development team so I guess we will see.
I am a little surprised that this functionality is not already built in to these widgets. I don't quite see the logic of these widgets not honouring each other. Why would you want an attribute table that returns everything in the dataset when you are just looking at a single date/time within a time slider.
These widgets are supposed to be able to be used together in the Launch Pad and Dart Themed Templates, but they don't communicate with each other. Doesn't make much sense to me.

Did not need to think very deeply to come up with a 'widget request'.
In our company (Brabant Water) we use a wide spread web application for maintaining hydrants and valves (also open or closed display of valves) which is especially built for us, using ArcGIS online pop-ups. Now we would like to give this application the same look and feel of our other web applications that are all built with the WAB. Of course I can put together the needed functionality, but...
the edit pop- up is way too large (over a dozen fields) and there is no way that I can configure them in a way that they don't take so many space. Mind, the people in the field use smaller devices than in the office.
So can you come up with an edit widget in which the layout of the pop-up can be modified to a very narrow, few space using object.

Layer List Widget for radio buttons instead of check boxes. At the moment the user is required to turn a layer off and another layer on when they only want to display one layer at a time. It confuses end users.

Are you referring to my parcel search on my County website. If so that code is not part of the eSearch. My county site uses custom RESTfull web services to provide access to my counties CAMA data and then I have just use normal dojo domConstruct calls to build reports in html code on a div that can be sent to the printer and I use PrintTask to get a MAP_ONLY output from my print service to get the image of the map. But all my code is completely specific to my data and my custom .net web services.

Thank you for all of your hard work with creating and maintaining your custom WAB widgets. I have several deployed in a few apps! However, I really miss your Enhanced Draw widget. The functionality that you provided in the version for WAB 1.2 was the BEST! Now that I'm trying to update and add/create additional WAB apps, I've found that Esri's draw widget just doesn't let me add information to go with the drawn elements, such as a circle. I hope you consider updating your Enhanced Draw widget for WAB DevEd 2.5. Thanks again for your help.
