Build Overview

I build mosaic datasets from 1000-6000 aerial images.  Images are overalapped 60% in each dimension to aid in stitching.  When building an Overview, it looks like the NorthWest Mosaic method is used, resulting in seams with a grid of 40% of the image dimensions.  I'm suggesting an alternative option: Build the Overview image with unoverlapping images at the top layer, and fill in the gaps with the remaining images.  This would produce a cleaner, more usable overview image for my application.

    For example:

    1) Start with the top left image
    2) Moving east, find the next image that doesn't overlap at all, and repeat until reaching the east boundary.
    3) Move to the next "row", finding the next image that doesn't overlap, etc
    4) Build the Overview image with unoverlapping images at the top layer, and fill in the gaps with the remaining images.
