I've successfully tested to download a point feature service in a local geodatabase and to keep the local data updated by sync with the new Android SDK (Beta Status).
One useful mechanism here would be a comparison between the server and client data for changes in front of the sync process to ask the user if he really wants to update his local data. That would provide a efficient way for sync in areas where network connection is slow!
