Support for Landsat 8 Raster Data

Idea created by JDKent on Aug 7, 2013
Landsat is an invaluable raster data resources for educators, scientists, and professionals.  The collection of raster tools in ArcGIS are extremely powerful and a convenient resource for managing and manipulating raster data.  Currently, ArcGIS 10.2 will support Landsat 1-7 data within the mosaic dataset.  Unfortunately, the Landsat 8 Operational Land Imager (OLI) is not supported in ArcGIS 10.2.

As a “Raster Product,” Landsat 1-7 imagery can be quickly displayed via the MTL files [link].  This is a powerful way of utilizing the data without much manipulation or the need to composite the rasters into a single file.  While Landsat 5 and 7 are supported, the Landsat 8 OLI is not.
When used within a mosaic dataset, the “Add Rasters to Mosaic Dataset” tool allows the end user to load, manage, and manipulate the data using a powerful collection of tools and functions.  The mosaic dataset supports multiple “Raster Types,” which perform similar in nature to the raster products noted above.  When using the “Add Rasters to Mosaic Dataset” tool, there are multiple raster type template options available [link].  Unfortunately, Landsat 8 OLI is not supported either.
Given the overall success of the Landsat program and utility of the raster capabilities supported in ArcMap, it seems to me that supporting Landsat 8 OLI (as well as its thermal sensors) should be a priority for ESRI.

Support the Landsat 8 OLI as a Raster Product and Raster Type.   Workflows depicting techniques and functionality should also be provided and updated as the research community realize new methods for utilizing the band combinations available via Landsat 8.
