I am an early fan of BAO. On thing i notice is missing is the ability to create dot-density maps. Most, if not all GIS packages that focus on consumer/real estate markets have the abilty to do this application. Thanks
I work for a Commercial Real Estate company and the ability to have dot density maps would be extremely helpful. Not only in BAO but also ArcGIS Online.
We have received requests from tenants that we represent, asking for ONE map, showing a color-coded (heat map) with a dot density map overlaid. As an example, a day care provider will request ONE map showing the median household income as a color-coded (heat map), with a dot dentist map showing children aged 0-9 overlaid on-top of the color-coded map.
This allows the tenant to figure out where there is a concentration of day-care aged children with families that likely have the type of income that would enroll a child in their daycare.
Having both types of maps shown on one map, makes it easier/quicker to find the areas they are interested in looking for available properties. This type of map allows us to show all of the data in one place, without having flip back and forth between maps. In addition it allows us to overlay other types of information that the tenant requests, so in the end they receive one map with all of the information that will assist them in picking the correct location.
Thank you for your detailed response on the need for the dot density map. This is very helpful. I will be reaching out to you for more information on this topic and in general your feedback on BAO. Thank you for being a valued user of ArcGIS.
Hi Scott and Praveen,
I also work in the commercial real estate industry. We frequently use dot density to visualize population metrics at various census geography levels. I have tried using some of the other symbology allowed in BAO / ArcGIS Pro, but it doesn't show the density as well as the standard dot density. It is important to be able to set the dot value and size, like you can in ArcMap.
BAO, ArcGIS Online, and ArcGIS Pro lack this capability. Most commercial real estate companies frequently use this feature, and it is one of the most common thematic maps that we create. ESRI will begin to lose this market segment if their new products are missing this feature.
Thank you for more context Rachael. Really helpful for us to further review this. Would it be possible for you to share an image of the sample dot density map that you are using to visualize population metrics at various census geography levels? Is it similar to the dot density map described here: Using dot density layers—Help | ArcGIS for Desktop?
It is exactly the use that is covered in the link you provided. I am not sure about other industries, but in commercial real estate we typically map census data at the block group level, even when the map is zoomed out pretty far. It allows us to see detailed clusters when planning regional location strategies.
If we use other census geographies it is simply because BAO changes census geography automatically as the map is zoomed out. In ArcMap we are able to use block groups no matter what the zoom level is. We then print the maps to plotters for large format output.
ArcGIS Pro is missing the dot density capability as well, and this keeps us from being able to completely transition to the product. The ArcGIS Pro product still has some bugs and limitations, but it also has incredible potential as it matures. We'd like to be able to transition to it completely.
This is a sample of what we can generate in ArcMap, and would like BAO and ArcGIS Pro do be capable of the same. We use data enriched shape files for block group geography to achieve this.
Thank you for investigating this further!
Thanks for the additional information, Rachael. We really appreciate hearing from our users.
We are in the process of reviewing this requirement and coming with a plan to address this need.
Yes! Healthcare could use this as well! We are out west, and many ZIPs and even Census tracts are giant, but the actual housing is clustered around the roads. bao
As an update, this functionality will rely on ArcGIS Online supporting dot density symbology within Smart Mapping. This is not available at this time, but once it is, it will be possible to implement this idea.
Please continue to share your workflows, and how dot density is beneficial to your projects.
It did seem that if AGOL implemented the symbology it would be available to BAO. I’m thankful that this seems to be something that is in progress!
Would this also mean that ArcGIS Pro would have dot density as well?
We have been forced to get by with scaled symbols in the meantime. While scaled symbols have useful applications, our industry doesn’t respond very well to change, and it is harder to map different variables simultaneously.
We use this all the time for population variables—at times using different colored dots on the same map (people under 50 years old / people over 50 years old). It’s a useful way to visualize this kind of information.
