Sub-addresses are an important part of an address in the FGDC Thoroughfare, Landmark, and Postal Address Data Standard which was sponsored by URISA and NENA. Sub-addresses are an additional set of address elements that differentiates a specific place within a numeric street address. In the past, sub-address information was like a comment field. Now under the new standard, a sub-address can be used to denote a unique location just as a numeric address did in the past. Examples include apartments, floors, suites, units, rooms, seats, directional and additional location information. These specify important differentiations of place that are relevant to package delivery, emergency response, in-building mapping, location intelligence and other emerging technologies. I propose that ESRI locators be enhanced to geocode to the sub-address, and preserve all sub-address information when standardizing addresses. It is clear that the spatial data industry is moving to the use of more granular address locations. This demand is coming from the 9-1-1 community, national street and address data providers, and from the masses using mobile applications.
