Preview Python Scripts in Catalog

Idea created by ChrisPBacon on Jun 14, 2012
    Hey ESRI,
I was just working on developing a new course for our Students here at the NGA College and was trying to find all the new ways we can interact with Python scripts in ArcGIS Desktop 10. After adding the custom datatype .py under the Catalog options, I selected a script in the Catalog Tree and changed the view to "Preview" hoping I would be able to view the actual code in Catalog. Of course, I wasn't able to do this much the same as I wouldn't be able to view a .doc file in Catalog. What I don't understand is that at 10, ESRI has pretty much declared Python to be their exclusive scripting language. If that's the case, I shouldn't have to add the custom data type and it would be nice to easily preview the code in Catalog. Or at least right click from Catalog and select Edit in IDLE.
