Let Network Analyst use GTFS public transit data

Idea created by morangm on Apr 23, 2012

The General Transit Feed Specification (GTFS) is a recently-developed data format for storing public transit routes, stops, and schedules.  GTFS data is used in Google Maps transit trip planning. Many major public transit systems have made up-to-date GTFS data for their systems readily available for download.

I would love to see Network Analyst do a better job of analyzing public transit. Network Analyst needs to be able to use GTFS data.  Public transit analysis is so imporant!

I've been working on developing a custom geoprocessing tool with python that lets me calculate walking/transit service areas using GTFS data (see http://www.transit.melindamorang.com), but I'd love to see ESRI do it for real.
