To make upgrading geodatabase server easier for ArcMAP MXDs

    The description of the problems:
We are a relatively large organization with users accessing enterprise ArcSDE for Oracle geodatabase. We upgrade geodatabase servers every 2 or 3 years. Most of the users have 10 - 20 ArcMap mxd documents. Whenever we change the geodatabase server to a new server, we need to change the geodatabase connection from the old to the new for all the layers in all existing mxd files. On top of that, we also have ArcIMS and ArcGIS Server applications which access ArcSDE geodatabase as data source. You can imagine how much work to for us to do when we upgrade our geodatabase server.

    Suggestion:
ArcMap mxd reads and stores connection configuration files. The connection configuration file will store the server name. When the server name is changed, user will only need to update the connection configuration file. The ArcMap mxd will not require update as long as the connection configuration file names stay the same.  This way, it's much easier to move to new servers.
