So moderators of the geonet's ideas site (most noticeably Kory Kramer) often spot an idea that is essentially a duplicate and as such tag the idea as duplicate which stops people voting and directs them to the original idea. As Kory says in this post duplicate ideas often add more context to a problem and thus worthy of keeping than deleting outright.
But it appears to me that any votes on the idea before it is marked duplicate are essentially lost.
So my idea is that any ideas with votes that have been marked as duplicate contribute to the over all vote of the idea they are linked to.
So as way of an example: original idea has a score of 50, duplicate idea 1 has score of 20 and duplicate idea 2 has 60 so what I would like to see is the original idea showing a score 130 (80 from duplicates). This boosts the original idea and gives a clear indication that different people have come to the same idea but have used different language to describe the problem.
